Lewis Allan Reed alias Lou Reeddilahirkan 71 tahun lalu di Brooklyn, New York, Amerika Serikat, tepatnya pada 2 Maret 1942. Pria berbakat yang mulai belajar gitar melalui radio dan menggawangi beberapa band selama masih sekolah ini telah melakukan rekaman pertama dengan band blues nya yang bernama The Jades. Pada 1960 Reed kulah di Universitas Syracuse dan mempelajari jurnalisme, penyutradaraan, dan creative writing.

Reed tinggal bersama dengan musisi John Cale yang waktu itu sedang menjalani kuliah musik di New York. Kemudian mereka mengundang seorang gitaris Sterling Morrison dan drummer Maureen Tucker, untuk membuat sebuah group band yang diberi nama Velvet Underground. Walau tidak terlalu laris, namun Velvet Underground kemudian menjadi yang sangat berpengaruh. Saking berpengaruhnya, majalah musik Rolling Stone mencatat Velvet Underground sebagai band paling berpengaruh urutan ke 13 sepanjang masa. Bahkan, Brian Eno, seorang musisi dan komposer Inggris pernah mengatakan bahwa, walaupun album Velvet Underground hanya terjual 10 ribu copy, namun semua orang yang membelinya telah membentuk band.

Usia tidak membatasi Reed untuk berkarya, musisi yang juga telah membintangi 10 judul film ini pada 2010 turut andil dalam album Gorillaz pada vokal. Dan pada tahun 2012, turut berkontribusi vokal untuk band Metric di album Synthetica. Bahkan pernah beraksi bareng Metallica pada 2009. Karena merasa saling tertarik akhirnya pada 2011 bikin abum bareng Metallica yang diberi judul Lulu.

Sebagai pria peminum dan pengguna aktif obat-obatan terlarang, Reed akhirnya mengalami gangguan kesehatan dan menjalani transplantasi hati pada awal 2013 lalu dan sempat membatalkan konsernya di California. Dan akhirnya menghembuskan nafasnya yang terakhir pada 27 Oktober 2013. Selamat jalan Reed, karya-karyamu akan selalu menginspirasi.

Lulu is a collaborative album between rock singer-songwriter Lou Reed, and heavy metal band Metallica. It is also one of the final studio recordings that Reed was involved in before his death in 2013.[1] The album was recorded in San Rafael, California, during April through June 2011, after Reed had played with Metallica at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 25th Anniversary Concert which led to them wanting to collaborate. The lead single from the album, titled "The View", was released on September 27, 2011.[2]

Conceptually, the album is based on Lulu - two plays originally written by the German playwright Frank Wedekind. The majority of the album's composition is centred around spoken word delivered by Reed over instrumentals composed by Metallica, with occasional backing vocals provided by Metallica lead vocalist James Hetfield. Reed wrote the majority of the lyrics. The album was released worldwide on October 31, 2011, and on November 1 in North America.[3] Upon its release, Lulu received mostly negative reviews from music critics.
Lulu would be Reed's last album before his death on October 27, 2013.
