Police have arrested a mosque imam for sexually harassing and attempting to rape a seven-year-old girl in Morrelganj, Bagerhat on Tuesday.

The detainee, Emdadul Haque Mridha, 45, is the imam of Nurnagar Jame mosque and a resident of Jiudhora village.

According to the grandfather of the child, Emdadul was sexually harassing the seven-year-old for over two months, and tried to rape her while she was taking Arabic lessons from the accused.

Denying their allegations, the imam said he has been framed because of the problems associated with the mosque.

Morrelganj police station OC Thakur Das Mandal said: "Acting on the complaint we arrested Emdadul on Tuesday afternoon. A case has been filed."
