Jakarta Deputy Governor Sandiaga Uno has said motorcyclists may not pass Jl. Jatibaru Raya in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, during hours that vendors are allowed to operate on the street.

“They must be ticketed because only public minivans [and Transjakarta buses] can use [the street],” Sandiaga said Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com.

The street is occupied by hundreds of street vendors from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Angkot (public minivan) drivers had repeatedly protested the city administration’s move to close the street to traffic and allow street vendors to occupy it, saying it caused a significant decrease in their income. Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan eventually relented and said angkot drivers could pass the street from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., while Transjakarta Explorer buses continued to operate from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

However, when the street was reopened to angkot, motorcyclists also started using it. (wnd)
