Man stabs 10 children outside school in China, kills self
A 42-year-old man stabbed 10 primary school children before killing himself in Haikou city located in the southern Chinese province of Hainan. The attacker, known as Li Xijun, stabbed six boys and four girls outside Yangfan Primary School on 29 February.
According to state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV), the incident occurred at about 11am local time (3am GMT) after which the children were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Two of the children suffered serious injuries, but not life threatening, it reported.
The children were about to be released when the man approached them from outside the school, South China Morning Post cited witnesses as saying. A clinic owner said the children were about eight years old and all suffered head injuries.
Police said the "vicious attack" was "brought on by extreme actions". Police declined to give further details, but said they were investigating the case.
Knife attacks in China had declined after a spurt of assaults on school children five years ago, which were mostly carried out by mentally disturbed individuals. Post the incidents, security at school had been beefed up at the behest of worried parents.
In March 2010, an unemployed middle-aged doctor had killed eight children with a knife in Fujian province. The depressed man had assaulted the children because of a failed relationship. Five months later, a man stabbed two students in a middle school in Nanchang city in southern Jiangxi Province. In the same year, nearly 20 children were killed and more than 50 injured in knife related crimes.
Later in December 2012, a man injured 22 children and an adult outside a primary school in Chengping village, central Henan Province, with a knife. Min Yingjun, 36, was arrested by security officers, however, the motive for the attack was not known.
According to Reuters, violent crimes are rare in China as compared to other countries. Nonetheless, in recent years there has been a series of knife and axe attacks targeting children, the news agency reported.
