A member of the Nusra Front, Al-Qaeda’s branch in Syria, posted a photo to Twitter claiming to show his friend carrying “a brand new US machine gun.” Identifying himself as Abu Saeed Al-Halabi, he said members of Division 30, a group of U.S.-trained Syrian rebels, delivered the weapon.

The authenticity of the image could not be confirmed, and it was unclear where the photo was taken. But it follows reports last week that the U.S.-trained rebels gave Nusra Front ammunition and half a dozen pick-up trucks on September 21-22, and were granted safe passage in exchange, a U.S. military spokesman said, according to Reuters.

Division 30, a group of 54 fighters trained by the Pentagon to fight ISIS, has continuously been an embarrassment to the U.S. Five of its members were detained by the Nusra Front—its rival—in July. In August, the group claimed it headquarters in Aleppo was
hit in an airstrike. Then, earlier this month, the group’s chief of staff resigned, according to a statement outlining a list of problems with the unit.

The Twitter post, published early Wednesday morning appearing to show an American weapon in the hands of the Nusra Front, marks yet another blow to the U.S. over its failed program.

The photo drew criticism from some concerned that the photo could “harm our common cause and jihad.”
