IDF corroborates Hizbullah 'Scud-D' claims
IDF corroborates Hizbullah 'Scud-D' claims

IDF corroborates Hizbullah 'Scud-D' claims
The IDF has said on record for the first time that Hizbullah has 'Scud-D' ballistic missiles. (IDF)
Key Points
The IDF says that Hizbullah has 'Scud-D' ballistic missiles with a range of 700 km
The range is well in excess of what the Lebanese group needs to target Israel
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) released an infographic on 2 March stating that the Lebanese group Hizbullah has 'Scud-D' ballistic missiles in its inventory.

This is the first time the IDF has gone on the record to corroborate reports that Syria is transferring its longest-range missiles to its Lebanese ally.

The first claims that Hizbullah was acquiring 'Scud-Ds' emerged in April 2010, when the then Israeli president Shimon Peres said that Syria was transferring 'Scud' ballistic missiles to the group. While he did not identify the types involved, unidentified members of his entourage told journalists they were 'Scud-Ds'.

More claims that Syria is transferring sophisticated weapons to Hizbullah, including 'Scud-Ds', have emerged since the pro-democracy uprising morphed into a civil war towards the end of 2011.

The 'Scud-D' is the popular name for a Syrian version of the Hwasong 7 ballistic missile, which North Korea was developed from the original Soviet R-17 Elbrus (SS-1 'Scud-B'). The Hwasong 7 is generally said to be a stretched variant of the Hwasong 6 with a smaller warhead weighing 500 kg to give it a longer range of 700 km.

If this is the case, it does not resemble the Soviet missile that some experts claim is the real 'Scud-D', which has a separating re-entry vehicle with an even smaller warhead and more accurate terminal guidance.

Given that Syria refers to its 'Scud'-type missiles as the Julan (Golan) series, the Syrian missile's real name is probably Julan 3.

The IDF statement that the infographic supported did not mention any ballistic missiles by name, only stating that: "Hizbullah now possesses more than 100,000 rockets of Syrian and Iranian origin, with a payload ranging from 60 kg to almost 1 ton of explosives."

The other weapons that the infographic identified as being in Hizbullah's inventory included Zelzal-2 heavy rockets and M-600 tactical ballistic missiles with ranges of 250 km and 230 km, respectively. The M-600 is the Israeli name for Syria's Tishreen missile, which is a version of Iran's Fateh-110.

None of the weapons named on the infographic have a warhead weighing more than 500 kg.
