'Gangnam Style' shatters YouTube's view counter
Pop star Psy's 2012 hit has racked up so many views that YouTube had to reprogram its counter.



Kim Kardashian may have aimed to break the Internet with her risqué photo shoot for Paper magazine, but South Korean pop star Psy outdid her by almost breaking YouTube this week.

Psy's 2012 hit "Gangnam Style" has racked up so many views on YouTube (more than 2.15 billion) that the company had to reprogram its view counter.

“We never thought a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer (=2,147,483,647 views), but that was before we met PSY,” Google, which owns YouTube, wrote in a blog post.

“Gangnam Style has been viewed so many times we had to upgrade to a 64-bit integer (9,223,372,036,854,775,808).”

That raises the viewing limit for a video to nine quintillion, giving Kardashian and others something to strive for.
