The first Leopard 2A5 tanks arrived to Poland
On the 16th of May 2014 a special train arrived to the 34th Armoured Cavalry Brigade in Zagan. On its railway wagons from Germany the first 11 Leopard 2A5 tanks reached Poland. It's first step in the new history of the 34th Brigade. Tanks were purchased under an intergovernmental agreement. There are from the stocks of the Bundeswehr.

According to the agreement signed on the 23th of November 2013 by the Ministers of Defence Tomasz Siemoniak and Thomas de Maizière, for an amount of 180 million euros Poland has acquired 105 Leopard 2A5 tanks, 14 Leopard 2A4 tanks, 18 Bergepanzer 2 armoured recovery vehicles, 120 Mercedes DB1017A trucks, 40 U1300L Unimog trucks, 40 Mercedes MB250 light off-road vehicles (including the ones with the communication equipment) and other special equipment.
The schedule deliveries of tanks assumes that in year 2014 most of the Leopard tanks - 77 of A5 version and 14 of A4 version will arrive to Poland. In 2015, the last 28 Leopard 2A5 tanks are to reach Poland.
At the end of January 2014 the information was made public that the second brigade of Polish Armed Forces equip with Leopard 2 tanks will be the 34th Armoured Cavalry Brigade in Zagan. The brigade so far has been armed with two battalions of PT-91 Hardy tanks. In addition to the 10th Armoured Cavalry Brigade armed with Leopards 2A4 and 17th Mechanized Brigade equipped with APC Wolverine (Rosomak), the brigade of Zagan is part of the 11th Armored Cavalry Division (also known as the Black Division). For the location of the next battalions of tanks from Germany decided a nearby location of the 10th Armoured Cavalry Brigade that have been experienced in the operation with Leopards, training center equipped with simulators, a nearby large military range and the plan to harmonize the potential of 11th Division.

Poland runs a program of modernization of 128 Leopard 2A4 tanks from the 10th Brigade and Training Center Land Forces. The offer was made by only one consortium - Polish Defence Holding (Polski Holding Obronny) cooperating with the Krauss Maffei-Wegman. It assumes the modification of the new tank gun stabilisation (from hydraulic to electric), add-on armour elements, equipped with auxiliary power unit and the installation of modern observation and sighting devices. In the future Polish Armed Forces plans to upgrade the Leopard 2A5 tanks as well.
Next to upgrading tanks Leopard 2A4 to version PL (PL like Polish), Polish Armament Inspectorate commenced a process leading to similar work on Bergepanzer 2 (BPZ 2) armoured recovery vehicles. The main objective of the program is to provide the modernized ARVs opportunities to evacuate heavy armoured vehicles weighting up to 65 tons.
