Philippine Air Force signs up for AW109 Power helos
The Philippine Air Force (PAF) has signed a contract for eight AgustaWestland AW109 Power utility helicopters to be used for homeland security missions, the company announced on 6 November.

The procurement is part of a wider revamp of the PAF's rotary-winged inventory, which includes the purchase in 2011 of five Bell UH-1H Iroquois ('Huey') utility helicopters from the United States, and five former German UH-1Ds which were observed at Yuba County Airport in California earlier in 2013 with PAF markings.

The PAF's inventory in general, and UH-1 fleet in particular, has suffered from a high loss rate in recent years. The majority of the PAF's Huey fleet first saw service with the US Army during the Vietnam War, and have been subject to numerous grounding orders during their 40 years in Philippine service.

Concerns about the airworthiness of the Philippine helicopter fleet have not been restricted to its Huey fleet. In August 2010 a navy Eurocopter BO-105 C Bolkow utility helicopter crashed into the sea south of the Philippines, killing the two pilots.

Other helicopters currently in PAF service comprise the PZL-Swidnik W-3 Sokól, MDHI MD 500 Defender, Sikorsky S-70A Black Hawk, Sikorsky AUH-76/S-76A, AgustaWestland AB205A, and Bell 412EP/SP.
