In an event more closely resembling an episode of Ru Paul’s Drag Race than a beauty pageant, the contestants of the 2013 Miss Universe pageant took to the runway in Moscow, Russia over the weekend for the annual National Costume Show. Filmed in advance of the pageant itself, the costume portion is supposed to allow contestants to use authentic dress to showcase their home country. This year, more often than not, the true meaning of the attire seemed to get lost in translation. Let's review some highlights.

1. Miss USA, Erin Brady – Detroit is back! Or Decepticon is back. Either way the price of gas is about to go way, way up.

2. Miss Switzerland, Dominique Rinerknech – Bern, Switzerland is like the Las Vegas of central Europe (no, no it's not). When Dominique isn’t busy competing in beauty pageants she works as a showgirl in one of Bern’s most festive upscale casinos (no, no she doesn't).

3. Miss Philippines, Ariella Arida – The Philliines cannot get enough of '80s prime-time soap Dynasty. Team Alexis or Team Krystal? Such debates are often at the root of the country’s most important happy hour conversations.

4. Miss Slovenia, Nina Ðurdevic – Slovenia recently got a new Joyce Leslie store in one of their local malls. They are very excited about it.

5. Miss Jamaica, Kerrie Baylis – Usually you need to smoke a lot of weed to see this many swirling colors. Luckily the Jamaican House of Representatives just passed a motion to decriminalize marijuana (no, really, October 8th 2013).

6. Miss Curaçao, Eline de Pool – The magical land you thought existed only in the mind of Dr. Suess is actually a real place called Curaçao. Their capital is Whoville and the main feature of their national cuisine is green eggs and ham. They used to do a bustling international trade in truffala trees, but widespread deforestation has turned theirs into tourism-based economy. JK JK so many pretty colorssss.

7. Miss Denmark, Cecilia Iftikhar – Any woman wearing a mermaid-inspired anything I can fully get behind, whether it relates to Denmark or not.

8. Miss Austria, Doris Hofmann – Apparently she followed the yellow brick road to a shoe store where she could swap out her ruby red slippers for something slightly more fierce.

9. Miss Germany, Anne Hagen – Either that’s a gymnast’s ring hanging between her legs or a kegel weight. Either way, the message is clear — German women are STRONG!

10. Miss Belgium, Noémie Happart – Satan was originally from Belgium? Did you know that? He still keeps a summer home there.
