Malaysia, Thailand tighten border security
TUMPAT: Malaysian police and their Thai counterparts are beefing up security along their respective countries' common border to block infiltration of suspected militants into Kelantan.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said the move was taken following the latest news reports on several Thai militant groups moving to the border areas.
He said police have yet to receive any information on suspected Thai militants sneaking into Malaysia through Kelantan.
"We remain cautious of the unstable situation in southern Thailand. "Although we have not received any reports on illegal movement, we are still gathering information from our Thai counterparts," he said after leading a border patrol operation in Pengkalan Kubor yesterday. Jalaluddin said such information was needed to help state police when they raise the issue in the coming border meeting.
Jalaluddin was commenting on a news report yesterday which stated that violence would remain in southern Thailand as militant groups did not agree with the peace agreement between militant group Barisan Revolusi Nasional and the Thai government.
Earlier, Jalaluddin and Takbai marine assistant commander Pipat Apipunyo spent about an hour on a patrol boat visiting several areas in the district and Rantau Panjang.
