The Graf Archive - A Star Wars Digital Preservation Project - Discussion thread
I have created this thread because it will allow discussions of the direction of the Archive without clogging up the very important thread located here -
The Continuing Brand New Star Wars Thread (all your Star Wars dreams fulfilled)
I will still be posting content there but I would like to move any discussions here whenever possible.
For those that don't know, here is some information about the project.
The Graf Archive (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Graf_Archive) is described as: "The Graf Archive was a vast depository of documents and other materials of public or historical importance. Covering most of Orchis 2's surface, its many databank, galleries, and shelves contained texts, antiques, artworks, and even preserved plants and animals from all across the galaxy. The items which could not be readily identified were placed in the underground Shadow Stacks, where they waited to be processed, often for several years. Positions within the Graf Archive included mere archivists, a Director, and a Head Curator."
This project is an effort to collect every digital element in and around the Star Wars universe. One reason why this come along is there is a great many sites that contained unique and original material that has disappeared over the years. I hate the thought of the love that I share with the franchise is being lost because the creators can't afford to keep buying the domain name, or whatever reason causes it to vanish. I have been a lover of fan fiction for many years and those sites vanish all the time. Once I started noticing them going away, I started saving whatever I could for myself. The Internet Archive is a resource that I am very thankful for because many of the items are saved there, but it doesn't have everything. Sometimes an entire site isn't captured and valuable fan contributions are gone forever. The link below is just one example of one of the good ones:
Code:
https://web.archive.org/web/20000823033959/http://www.shavenwookie.com:80/fanfic/
That is how this project first started, with the fan fiction and fan gathered information. Since then it has grown because of the changes from the "Expanded Universe" and all of those stories that I have been following for 30+ years to "Legends". I am not starting a discussion of "real" Star Wars before or after the Disney purchase, instead I am now only interested in preserving all (before and after the sale) of the digital content that I can get my hands on. As an example, the website starwars.com contained many small stories and exclusive content that was just wiped from history one day. Some things are available on archive.org but not nearly all of it. That is a huge loss of content that I have enjoyed for many years and I don't want that to happen to me again. That is when I started gathering everything including the comics, soundtracks, novels, audiobooks, magazines, etc. That is also when I started trying to catalog the items, and after a few different versions, here we are.
UPDATE (2020-11-23)
If you have followed me for a while, you know I got frustrated with the lack of help along with the "helpful tips" telling me that I am doing it wrong. I had to walk away for a bit and I am glad I did. I am back, but I am going to take a different approach than before. I have been working on the Archive, but not as much as I was. I have a full time job at over 60 hours a week and then I am doing a side development project for my family taking up about 20 hours on top of that. I take a "day off" from the project and work on the Archive. There are some things I am keeping up with and some things I am not. I need help and I am going to try again to recruit some of my fellow Star Wars fans. I am not talking about the scanners or the others that are already providing content, but instead I am offering a way for people to help contribute to the collection. The benefits will be full access to everything including the "Shadow Stacks" which is the working directories.
I have been keeping my sources under wraps because it has taken me a long time to find some of these things but I am going to try to share everything that I am doing and where I am getting the items. This will hopefully start to inspire people to get them and if not catalog them, then they can at least send them to me. There are quite a few of these and it is hard for me to monitor them constantly for changes. There are also items in newsgroups that can be gathered that I don't have. My point is there are many places where people can help. Another way is financially because Mega and seedboxes (for torrents) cost money and I have been supporting them for quite a while on my own. If you want to help in this way, you can message or email me and I will send you a Bitcoin address for you to contribute. I will be keeping a detailed accounting of everything and if you contribute and ask for that accounting, then I will provide it to you anonymized.
I will be updating this post with links to many different things including the sources, drop folder, and other things that will remain open to everyone. I will also be keeping this thread going and encourage others to post questions for me here instead of the main thread. I will continue posting new items to that thread and post a link here so new people can find it.
Links
To send files to me, drop them here:
Code:
https://mega.nz/megadrop/s_BpwFGaTPQ
Once files are sent there, or if I get something copied in from another location, they will be here:
Code:
https://mega.nz/folder/n6BzEAoZ#dhpEhJBq37pise2YLh5rfg
The updates to the Archive will be located here in date order:
Code:
https://mega.nz/folder/62BX2CAa#dQ3WLgdgaZ6HuSzr6XZzRw
If I start getting some help, I will post the Shadow Stacks folder which is a massive mess that I am trying to straighten out one directory at a time. It is the working area that I have used for years and has thousands of files in it to be sorted.
Contributions
One fantastic way to help out is to buy Mega vouchers for me (and kileko) from one of their resellers. You can then send us the code. I am currently using the Pro 2 plan (8TB) which is ~$22 a month or about $220 a year. Again, if you want to send me some Bitcoin just send me an email message and I will send you the address.
Sources
Here is where I get most everything that is new.
Soundtracks
There are a couple of sites that I monitor on a regular basis. These could be anything from films, tv, video games, collections, or whatever. I check them almost every day even though it could be weeks between releases:
Code:
http://download-soundtracks.com/
https://www.soundtracks.ir/
These are video game focused sites. The first one shows the releases in date order, top down. I just go there and scroll down the list. The other is easier to navigate:
Code:
https://downloads.khinsider.com/
https://www.sittingonclouds.net/
This last soundtrack one has a bunch of games and I want to eventually check to make sure that I have them all. Some of the games have FLAC releases and I would like to get the ones I am missing. This is one thing that I could use help with:
Code:
https://www.zophar.net/music/search?search=star+wars
The other place I check for soundtracks is YouTube. The problem is the search for them is crap if you are looking for latest releases. The other problem is they are about the only game in town. Here are some of the searches that I do when looking for new things:
Code:
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=star+wars+soundtrack&sp=CAISAhAD
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=star+wars+fan+soundtrack&sp=CAISAhAD
Also here is one of the tools that I use almost daily for downloading. Just have it running and copy the links and this does most of the work for you.
Code:
https://jdownloader.org/

Hi Graf, are the Crispin Han Solo books available in unabridged audio? If not, would it be easy to make them available via TTS?
