Appreciation of Story Book "A Cool Kid Like Me" by Hans Wilhelm
When I was a child, I loved reading storybooks, and now I am interested again in reading children's storybooks when I see the title of this book "A Cool Kid Like Me" by Hans Wilhelm. The first thought that comes to mind when I look at the title of this book is about a child's confidence. Overall in this book, there are more pictures that illustrate stories than words. Maybe because the target of this book is for children, the writer prefers to tell stories through pictures so that children are more interested. The choice of characters is quite simple because the writer's goal is that children who read can understand the story easily. Actually, this book tells the story of the main character of a boy who has excessive fear in him. Usually to reduce his fear he told his grandmother, until one day his grandmother had to long vacation and leave him alone. As a substitute for his grandmother's departure, she gave a gift that is a teddy bear, but it was underestimated the parents of the child who felt his child was too big to get a doll. "Nobody is too old for a teddy! It will keep him company while I am away, " said his grandmother. Her real goal is to give her grandchildren another place to tell stories and express their fears.
at the beginning of the story, it was shown that the boy as the main character felt considered great by other people around him “This story is about a kid everyone thought was so terrific and so cool. That kid was me.”. " But the words, "everyone thought" more shows that it is only the thoughts of people, not what he really feels. On the next page, it is explained how cool he is as a boy who runs his normal life. But on the other hand, he also told that his parents had thoughts like other people around him. "My parents left me alone a lot. They thought I was a cool kid. But that was only on the outside. They didn't really know me.". This boy felt that his parents didn't know him well either. He further mentioned that there was only one person who truly understood himself, namely his grandmother. He can tell all the fears in him because he thinks his grandmother is a good listener "and I told her everything, like how scared I was without a night-light or how awful I felt when I dropped the ball." Until one day his grandmother had to travel far away and give a teddy bear as a substitute for him.
In the next section, it is told the boy's daily life is without his grandmother. The boy began to express his fear of the teddy bear by speaking to the teddy bear before he slept. He told all the things he feared about his father and mother who quarreled, scared when he was in the darkroom alone and also afraid of the scope of his friendship. After telling all of his feelings of fear to the teddy bear he could feel better and forget the problem in the morning. "In the morning things wouldn't look so bad. I would get ready to be that cool kid again, everyone thought was so terrific.”. In this section, it appears that this boy thinks that being a brave child is something that is cool and he wants to be like that.
This book tells us that a child's anxiety and fear must be responded to wisely. Like his grandmother who can overcome the problem of fear of her grandchildren with small things like teddy bears but can have a big impact on her grandchildren. The fear faced by this boy is not a big thing but his parents never take it seriously making this child worry about the fear he has. His parents always assumed that his child was "cool" and no longer needed more attention from them. The words "cool kid" here can be interpreted as a child who can overcome all his anxiety and fear. This boy has overcome his anxiety and fear, so he can be called a cool kid.
