Literary Appreciation of Poem of The Plains by A.B Paterson
The Plains
by A.B Paterson
A land, as far as the eye can see, where the waving grasses grow
Or the plains are blackened and burnt and bare, where the false mirages go
Like shifting symbols of hope deferred - land where you never know.
Land of the plenty or land of want, where the grey Companions dance,
Feast or famine, or hope or fear, and in all things land of chance,
Where Nature pampers or Nature slays, in her ruthless, red, romance.
And we catch a sound of a fairy's song, as the wind goes whipping by,
Or a scent like incense drifts along from the herbage ripe and dry
Or the dust storms dance on their ballroom floor, where the bones of the cattle lie.
ANALYSIS
The Plains poem by A.B Paterson illustrates several roles.
The plains play different roles during different seasons. example spring there is grass, in summer it becomes so hot that it burns the plains. the terrain turns into a shade that is difficult to see and on the other side the plain is soft so it has an important role for humans and animals.
the poet says everything is destined, describing how nature can be cruel. it is not only cruel to predators who are passionate about eating animals and plants but also cruel to humans.
A land, as far as the eye can see, where the waving grasses grow
Or the plains are blackened and burnt and bare, where the false mirages go
Like shifting symbols of hope deferred – land where you never know.
In the first stanza of The Plains, there are two aspects of land. one is land that can be seen by many eyes meaning this is a lot of land, the other is black and arid plains, land that is deficient.
To use this aspect the poet has used poetic tools so that it becomes an image, such as "where the waving grasses grow" he wants to tell the resistance which is full of food, but with the word "blackened plain" he wants to show nature with a cruel season. for example summer and autumn.
The poet has employed every possible poetic tools such as; Simile – as far as the eye can see, which brings about an image of the vastness of the land, Personification – waving grasses grow, which means happy and welcoming because waving is generally associated with welcoming, and Alliteration – grasses grow.
Line 1 and line 2 can be interpreted to be bad or good, safe or dangerous. there is also using imaging and repetition in line 2 in the word "“blackened and burnt and bare.” ". and the third line of the poem uses the word parable. for the entire first 3 lines the poem is like a continuation of a never-ending view.
Land of the plenty or land of want, where the grey Companions dance,
Feast or famine, or hope or fear, and in all things land of chance,
Where Nature pampers or Nature slays, in her ruthless, red, romance.
In the second stanza of the poem says the two types of land have different functions. one land to say is food, the other is land lacking. in the land they dance, party and even starve. there is hope and fear in the land, where nature determines the destiny of the land itself.
The stanza mentions that the land has a lot of food on offer. full of plants and animals. and in this whole strophe discusses two forms of nature. the first form is pampering the second form of cruel killing.
And we catch a sound of a fairy’s song, as the wind goes whipping by,
Or a scent like incense drifts along from the herbage ripe and dry
Or the dust storms dance on their ballroom floor, where the bones of the cattle lie.
In the third stanza, poets bring up more picture of the dangers of the weather, good and bad.
The language used by the poet makes the reader feel the part of something he said, first with the word "we", with "sound of a fairy’s song " using the language of hearing, to captivate the reader's feelings and explain something smooth, beautiful and soft. through the word "strong wind" he describes the sound of the wind.
line 2 with the phrase "a scent like incense" , the poet captivates the sense of smell. and "the herbage" is herbage plants, the overall meaning of this line uses the sense of smell to make poetry smoother.
last line highlights 2 weather conditions. first that the weather is fine even "dancing dust storms", and that is the same floor as "dead buried cow bones". it was the floor there where the cows died when the nature changed its role became cruel.
the word "dust storm" describes the weather. "he bones of the cattle lie" how bad or good the weather is. and the word "dancing" is a personification of a dust storm. and poets use metaphors when they say "on their ballroom floor "
CONCLUSION
The Plains by Banjo Paterson or A.B.a poem describing the extreme weather of Australia. This poem not only reveals the cruel aspects of nature, but also the good aspects such as waving grass, the land of babyak, natural pamper, romance, the sound of fairy songs, dust storms dancing on their dance floors. the poet has divedakan between the land in the city and in the countryside. the theme of poetry is extreme nature.
