APPRECIATION: AN OLD STORY by EDWIN ARLINGTON ROBINSON

Strange that I did not know him then
That friend of mine!
I did not even show him then
One friendly sign;

But cursed him for the ways he had
To make me see
My envy of praise he had
For praising me

I would have rid the earth of him
Once, in my pride...
I never knew the worth of him
Until he died.

           I think the poem "An old story by Edwin Arlington Robinson" has a deep meaning which reveals a confession towards his friend. The poem has a different style that is unique and difficult to guess as to if it has something hidden inside. It has three stanzas with Rhyme; ABAB's first stanza, CDCD's second stanza, and EFEF's in the third stanza. Besides that, it has diction connotation or implied additional meaning. What's more, the title "old story" is the author's confessions of his friend. So that it has a deep meaning & it makes the readers thinking twice when they read and try to catch the meaning inside the poem.

                  In the first stanza, the author says "It is strange that I did not know him at that time" (Line 1) a description of the writer who said "Strange" if he did not know him at that time, meant that the author just consider his friend as a stranger and didn't think that he is a friend to him. "My friend of mine" (Line 2) The second line emphasizes the possibility that they were good friends in the past, but there is something that makes the author hate him so much, and that's why he tends to be selfish in treating his friend. Even the author's selfishness is increasingly seen in the third and fourth line " I did not even show him then" (Line 3) and "One friendly sign;" (Line 4) which show the author's unfriendliness.

           In the second stanza, the author says "But crushed him for the ways he had" (line 1). In this line the author tries to express what he feels and overflows it in this second stanza, thus raising speculation that this poem brings social issues in it. The author explained how he was jealous of his friend. That the destiny of his friend was meant to be seen "To make me see"(line 2).  In this case, there is an assumption that is "My envy for prise he had" (line 3) is a statement about jealousy towards his friend, and "For praising me" (line 4). The emotional speaker starts to peak and on this line, the speaker starts to open the reason why he hates his friend.

           In the third stanza, the author hated so much and didn't even want to be friendly with him, he always said bad things to him. He hated him so much that he even wanted to get rid of him "I would have rid the earth of him"(line 1). Even he says words that show his arrogance "Once, in my pride..." (line 2). But there is a shift in this poem in the third stanza and on lines third and fourth which says "I never knew the worth of him - until he died." (lines 3-5). This is the shift of this poem because it shows the author's hatred and sorrowfulness towards his friend at the same time. Until the third line, it showed the author's hatred towards his friend, but on the fourth line, it showed the author's sorrow feeling towards his friend.

       At conclusion, this poem illustrates a confession and emotional outburst from the author of his friends that he does not consider. It carries social issues such as prejudice and social jealousy. The author in this poem is talking about the hatred people have inside them. He called this poem "An Old Story" because maybe he hated someone in his past and always wanted to get rid of that person, but when that person died he felt sad for him and maybe thinks that he shouldn't have hated him too much.

Thank you for your attention I hope you guys enjoy my first post emoticon-Blue Guy Peace
