Skate punk dimulai pada pertengahan 1980-an di California, di mana skateboard yang menjadi populer dan dianggap sebagai bentuk pemberontakan.

Musik Skatepunk tumbuh dari Nardcore punk dari Oxnard, California. Hal ini sangat mirip dengan Nardcore, karena cepat dan agresif, namun beberapa skate punk lebih memfokuskan pada vokal melodic dan keagresifan pada skill drum. Skate punk biasanya juga lebih teknis daripada Nardcore.. Banyak anggota band punk skate telah menjadi pemain skateboard/bermain skateboard. Kadang lirik mereka berfokus pada, atau setidaknya referensi dari skateboarding.ada juga yang liriknya tentang krisis sosial,gaya musik punk cepat dan dimaksudkan untuk menciptakan kembali merasakan skateboarding. Instrumen yang biasa digunakan termasuk terdistorsi gitar dan surfing rock-style drum.
