Be Excited About Assassin’s Creed IV. And Be Skeptical.
Don't expect Kenway to be able to tree-run like Connor. Ubisoft has other mechanics planned for the jungle.
Quote:
We've been here before. It's time to tell you about a new Assassin's Creed.
This part went oh-so-well a year ago. Many of you were enthusiastic back then about a new character, a new continent and a new era. Many of you were not as enthusiastic in the fall, when you played the resulting game, Assassin's Creed III.
Can you be excited this time?
It's late winter. For the third time in four years the images of the next Assassin's Creed have leaked early. If you're paying enough attention, you know what the deal is: Assassin's Creed IV, a new numbered AC game, but, oddly, with a subtitle affixed: Black Flag.
Pirates. 18th century.
Edward Kenway. Father of ACIII's prologue protagonist Haytham Kenway, grandfather of its main assassin, Connor.
Open-world naval exploration/combat, mixed with jungle and city adventures. Three major cities: Havana, Cuba; Nassau, The Bahamas; Kingston, Jamaica.
You can attack other pirates. You can harpoon whales from your ship. You can dive and explore underwater. You can assassinate bad guys in cities.
I saw the game a week ago, and, no, it's not all been leaked. There's a bunch of things even big-time Assassin's Creed news-watchers don't know yet. There are reasons to be intrigued, reasons to be skeptical and reasons to be excited.
Spoiler for More:
Things the Black Flag Developers Say About Their Game That Is Code For "Don't Worry, We Won't Make Some of ACIII's Mistakes
"The Caribbean Sea is big. We wanted to make sure that it never feels lonely and empty, so, to support the main gameplay loop, we also added a lot of secondary systems that make the pirate life even more cool. " – Sylvain Trottier, ACIV producer
"We think we have a very strong gameplay loop, with all the systems helping each other to make sure that our players are constantly progressing in the game." – Sylvain Trottier, ACIV producer
"We have this super-cool setting people don't know a lot about." – Sylvain Trottier, ACIV producer
"The goal is: when you get to a city, you'll know where you are. -Sylvain Trottier, ACIV producer
"We don't just have one path; we try to have systemic paths." –Raphael Lacoste, ACIV art director
Edward Kenway "He's a fearsome dog that feeds off trouble and turmoil... I've seen him clear the deck of a Spanish galleon like it were nothing. Fighting like a devil, dressed as a man."
―Blackbeard speaking of Edward Kenway.
Edward Kenway (unknown - 1735) was a British privateer-turned-pirate, and a member of the Assassin Order. Early in his life, he joined the British Royal Navy, and once accepted, found himself stationed in the West Indies. However, a quick end to the war and the promise of gold, glory and fame eventually seduced him into a life of piracy; it was as a pirate that Edward first encountered the Assassin Order, and became embroiled in their struggle.
Edward was also the father of Haytham Kenway and the grandfather of Ratonhnhaké:ton; through this line, he was an ancestor of Desmond Miles.
Adéwalé
Adéwalé was a former slave from Trinidad, and a member of the Assassin Order. During the Golden Age of Piracy, he was also Edward Kenway's quartermaster aboard the Jackdaw.
At some point, Adéwalé helped Edward gain the Jackdaw and its crew, and around the year 1715, Adéwalé pointed out scenes of interest to his captain, who could then intervene or ignore them.
Fifteen years later, in 1730, Adéwalé found himself shipwrecked on the island of Saint-Domingue without a crew or weaponry. It was here that he found himself confronted once again with the realities of the slave trade.
Edward Thatch
Edward Thatch (c. 1680 – 1718), more commonly known as Edward Teach or the alias Blackbeard, was an infamous pirate captain who sailed the West Indies and the American Colonies during the early 18th century, on the ship Queen Anne's Revenge. Thatch was also a contemporary and associate of Edward Kenway.
Anne Bony
Anne Bonny (8 March 1702 – 22 April 1782) was an Irish pirate during the early 18th century who operated out of the Caribbean. At some point, she had a relationship with the Assassin Edward Kenway.
Benjamin Hornigold
Benjamin Hornigold (unknown - 1719) was an British pirate from 1715 to 1718. He was most famous for mentoring Blackbeard and for being one of the founders of the pirate republic at Nassau.
He later became a pirate hunter after the British offered him a letter of pardon in exchange for the lives of his former comrades. At some point, Hornigold met the Assassin Edward Kenway.
Charles Vane
Charles Vane (c.1680 – 29 March 1721) was an English pirate captain who sailed the West Indies from 1716 until 1719.
Calico Jack
Jack Rackham (27 December 1682 – 18 November 1720), more commonly known as Calico Jack, was a pirate captain who sailed the West Indies during the early 18th century.

Naval Combat was introduced in Assassin's Creed III and it will make a return in Assassin's Creed IV.
Naval Combat is more complex in Assassin's Creed IV, with new weapons, new enemies, new challenges, and a new progression system. One of these new elements is the enemies. You must also manage a crew. Assassin's Creed IV is about 60% land missions and 40% naval missions. An emphasis is being placed on populating the world with a litany of optional activities to engage in while you're piloting your ship to your next destination. Boarding
When you use the Spyglass to spot a ship, you can see its resources and then make the decision to board it. The Jackdaw can attack the enemy ship to weaken it, allowing you to lower its health to the point of boarding.
After weakening the ship, you can order the crew to throw hooks over and board the ship. You can now swing across using a rope.
The goal is to eliminate the enemy captain. You can freely attack the ship's enemies, climbing the mast for air attacks. You can also use a Swivel Gun. Source: Ubisoft press presentation attended by IGN
Enemy Ships
In Naval Combat a Charger is a ship that lines up a path to the Jackdaw, building up speed and attempting to ram with ship for damage. They can attack in groups.

Environmental Tactics
Dynamic weather can change the entire tone of a battle. Storms exist in the environment, and you can choose to avoid them or plunge right in. Enemy ships will also be affected by the weather, allowing you to gain a tactical advantage if you play your cards right.
Another tactic includes using waves as a form of protection. A wall of water acts as a kind of shield from bullets, so an advantageous use of placement on choppy seas will prevent you from being harmed by enemy ballistics.

There are 50 locations to explore across 3 main cities.
Quote:
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag features 50 different Caribbean locations to explore, though only three of these are those typically big cityscapes the series trades so well in: Havana, Kingston and Nassau.
Following the best-of theme, Ubisoft has designed its take on Havana to recall the grand, towering architecture of Assassin's Creed II. Hopefully Black Flag will also be able to capture the sense of glee gained from scampering around these environments. Kingston, on the other hand, is modelled in a way more similar to Boston in Assassin's Creed III; wider, flatter, and peppered with the hustle and bustle of life.
Nassau, on the other hand, serves as the pirates' base of operations. Historically, pirates flocked to Nassau after the governor of Jamaica refused to let a group of English privateers spend their loot on his island, which means it should enjoy a central role in the events of Black Flag.
The rest of your time will be spent visiting smaller locations including plantations, hidden coves, jungles, forts, Mayan ruins, and coconut islands. For the first time in the series you'll also be able to go underwater to explore sunken galleons, and have fights with sharks.
You can sail around in your own pirate ship.
Quote:
Edward's pirate ship, the Jackdaw, is a central part of the game. Assassin's Creed III's naval battles were one of its most well-received aspects, and while Black Flag was developed concurrently alongside its predecessor--work on the game started in 2011--it's clear that Connor's Aquila has had a big impact here.
The game's 50 locations are linked by open ocean, too, and the Jackdaw can nip around this world as the player sees fit. The ship's main purpose is to hijack, board and plunder other ships, and by spending the loot from these efforts the player can add upgrades and hire more crewmates in a bid to take on bigger, badder ships with more sensational swag. And by setting all of the game's side-missions around improving the Jackdaw, Ubisoft is hoping to regain some of the focus lost in the sprawl of Assassin's Creed III.
Spectacular sights are promised when the time comes to board enemy vessels, with all of your crew charging onto the enemy ship as you attempt to take on its captain. It's in your best interests here to work as quickly as possible, apparently, as the longer you dither the more likely it is that you'll have to spend your ill-gotten gains on hiring new crewmembers to replace those killed in the assault.
There will also be more variety in the types of enemy ships the player will have to take on, according to Ubisoft, and apparently each vessel will now fit into one of five archetypes--some ships will charge you head-on, for instance. But to make life easier on the open seas, Edward will also be able to use a spyglass to scan the environment and assess the capabilities of his targets, as well as what goodies they'll be carrying.
Edward Kenway is Ezio Auditore Mark II.
Quote:
Ratohnhaké:ton didn't quite have the flair and panache of his father Haytham or series superstar Ezio. Edward Kenway, however, is a confident, charismatic British privateer who, at the start of the game, is motivated by wealth and booze. He's also clearly a fan of doubles, shown in a CG trailer carrying a pair of pistols, dual swords, and enjoying some bedroom antics with two ladies at once.
Ubisoft isn't prepared to say that Edward has been designed to emulate Ezio, but the character's attitude and propensity towards action--and his own narrative arc, where he begins cocksure and arrogant but learns responsibility and wisdom through the Order of the Assassins, clearly bears some similarities with a certain Signor Auditore. And that can only be a good thing.
Assassin's Creed IV is riddled with pirates.
Quote:
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is set in the closing chapter of the Golden Age of Piracy, after the end of the War of Spanish Succession in 1714 saw numerous unemployed privateers turn to piracy in the region. The area is a vital part of history, as it was the beating heart of the booming transatlantic shipping routes and was a key location in the slave trade; the halfway point in a round trip that proliferated the trade of armaments, slaves, and exotic goods like sugar and cocoa.
Famous pirates like Charles Vane, Blackbeard, Benjamin Hornigold, Anne Bonny, and Calico Jack will all feature in Black Flag. The series' usual attempt to mix historical events with dramatic gameplay continues, and Ubisoft has already promised recreations of Bartholomew Roberts' raid of 42 Portuguese ships and Charles Vane's marooning--he'll be stuck on an island alongside Edward with only a bottle of rum and a loaded pistol, apparently. The most famous pirate of all, Blackbeard, features heavily in the game's CG trailer, too, so you can expect to see him around in much of the game.
