Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) tahu benar bahwa meskipun rezim apartheid telah runtuh namun benih perpecahan antara warga kulit putih dan warga kulit hitam di Afrika Selatan masih ada. Tapi ada satu hal yang diyakini Mandela. Ia yakin bahwa olahraga adalah salah satu cara untuk mempersatukan seluruh warga Afrika Selatan.
Mandela lantas mendorong warga kulit hitam Afrika Selatan untuk ikut mendukung tim rugby Springboks yang awalnya dibenci oleh warga kulit hitam. Mandela berharap dengan dukungan penuh seluruh warga Afrika Selatan, maka Springboks punya peluang untuk menundukkan tim favorit New Zealand dalam Piala Dunia Rugby yang rencananya akan segera digelar di Afrika Selatan.
Berhasilkah tim Springboks yang dipimpin Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon) menjadi juara? bisa bersatukah kaum kulit hitam dan kulit putih ?.
