The world’s biggest engineering university

The biggest engineering university in the world, NTU was ranked 26th in the Engineering & Technology category of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2011, moving up 10 places from the previous year’s rankings. It also placed eighth in the IT and Engineering category of the 2010 Asian Universities Ranking by QS in its annual survey of universities.

NTU's College of Engineering houses six schools and has about 16,000 students and almost 2,000 faculty and staff members. The six schools are:

School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering
School of Civil and Environmental Engineering
School of Computer Engineering
School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
School of Materials Science and Engineering
School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Internationally, the College of Engineering is known for its volume of research, placing NTU among the top three universities in the world in terms of research output. Among universities, the College is the fifth most cited worldwide.

In 2011, NTU's School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering and School of Computer Engineering were both ranked number one in Singapore and fourth in the world, after big league institutions MIT, University of California, Berkeley, and Stanford University. Conducted by the Higher Education Evaluation & Accreditation Council of Taiwan, a body that reviews standards in higher education and research, the rankings take into account criteria such as research productivity and impact.

As the bedrock of civilisation and modern cities, interdisciplinary research grounded in engineering looks set to continue to shape our lives in the future and solve a multitude of pressing global problems, such as climate change, ageing population, healthcare needs, the earth's sustainability, and global and personal communications.

Blossoming of the arts and humanities

While rooted in science and engineering, NTU offers a broad-based education in diverse disciplines. The university has developed complementary strengths in the humanities, arts, business, entrepreneurship and education to prepare students for the global working world.

The College of Humanities, Arts, & Social Sciences represents the dynamic interface between several major disciplines in three distinct schools: the School of Art, Design and Media, Singapore's first professional art school to offer degree programmes in art, design and interactive digital media; the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Asia's top school in mass communication; and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, offering a stimulating and multidisciplinary education in the humanities and social sciences.

Both the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) and School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) received their first full cohort of students in 2005 and welcomed their pioneer batch of Bachelor's degree graduates at the Convocation in July 2009.

The Arts and Humanities may be NTU's newest programmes, but they have risen significantly in the subject rankings of the QS World Universities Rankings 2011. Having risen 95 places from 2008, the young Arts & Humanities programmes are now ranked 98th globally in the 2011 QS subject rankings. This is a marked improvement, especially as the subjects were just launched six years ago, and reflect NTU’s fast-rising stature in the fine arts and languages domains.

Students and faculty of HSS and ADM, like those of the globally-reputed and more established Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, have been garnering international accolades for their creative work and research. In recent years, NTU has secured notable tie-ups in the arts and humanities disciplines with esteemed partners such as Harvard University in the United States and University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.

NTU has played host to a number of major international conferences in communication and the arts. In June 2010, the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information hosted the International Communication Association Conference – a first for Southeast Asia and a Singapore university. The conference further cements the reputation of NTU as a world-class university and its communication school as the premier one in Asia. In May 2010, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences co-hosted Singapore’s largest international conference on the overseas Chinese, contributing to the growing literature on the Chinese diaspora around the world. In June 2011, the school hosted another landmark conference that was one of the biggest literature conferences to be held in Singapore in recent years.

At the Wee Kim Wee School, a $500,000 prototype “newsroom of the future” is being built to improve the delivery of news by integrating facilities for producing newspapers, magazines and radio broadcasts. A joint initiative with the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), this facility is WAN-IFRA’s first such hub in the region and the fourth of its kind in the world.

The Nanyang Business School (College of Business) is consistently ranked in the top 35 of the Financial Times Global MBA rankings. This makes it one of the best business schools in Asia. The Nanyang Business School is also one of only three in Asia to be awarded both the EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System) and AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business) accreditations - international hallmarks of quality. In accounting research, NTU is ranked first in Asia by Brigham Young University, based on the productivity of its accounting researchers across 11 top accounting journals in the most recent six years. In addition, the Nanyang Business School is home to Asia’s top two accounting researchers. NTU is also the best globally in auditing research. Its actuarial science programme is the first in Singapore to be accredited by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, the world's oldest actuarial professional body.

NTU is also home to the National Institute of Education, Singapore's only national teacher training institute, which is recognised today as an integral part of Singapore's education system – one of the most successful educational systems in the world.
