Eminem - Rivalries Enemies and Beefs
Spoiler for Raymond Scott - "Benzino" and Eminem Beef:
A feud between the two had been boiling up for a while now and was bound to happen. Benzino, a member of the group 'Made Men', previously co-owner of The Source magazine and friend of Ja-Rule who had previously been in a vicious battle with Eminem decided to avenge by using his magazine to turn influence the opinions of the loyal readers. Claiming Eminem is part of 'The Machine', a system where he claimed Interscope and in particular Eminem or Jimmy Iovine was preventing the hood making it's money, Benzino ran a hate campaign on Eminem along with a comic series portraying himself as the savior of hip hop and Eminem as the 'Rap Hitler'.Around this time Eminem, who also believe The Source had something against him after what he believed poorly rating his albums lashed out with the track 'The Source', hard hitting and claiming that although he had not started this, he will certainly finish it. From here the tracks exchanged with 'Pull up your skirt' from Benzino responded to with 'Nail in the Coffin' followed by a flurry of tracks exchanged between the 2. These included 'Die Another Day', 'Yooz a character' from Benzino and 'Invasion 3 freestyle', 'Monkey See Monkey Do' from Mr Mathers. During this time Benzino also revealed racist tapes, which Eminem publically apologized for, explaining he was angry how he had been dumped by his girlfriend and was 'stupid' at the age of 16. After the release of 'Like Toy Soliders', a song which had Eminem putting the mic down on the situation, realizing that things had gone too far and it was time things came to an end before lives did.
In a short interview Eminem commented on the situation around the time of the 'Like Toy Soldiers' release stating: " A lot of times when rappers have beef, their sales incline. So meanwhile big record labels and heads of record labels, they benefit off this. They go home at night and they can sleep. They can rest their heads, and they can rest easy knowing that they are selling records. Meanwhile, we're really out here".
"We're out here, and when we're not out here, some of our people are out here. Usually, nine times out of 10, somebody out of someone's entourage meets up with someone from somebody else's entourage. Usually the innocent people that really ain 't got that much to do with it - besides affiliation - end up getting hurt or killed. So ['Like Toy Soliders'] was, metaphorically speaking, my way of saying, 'Before this goes any further, I'm done with it."
Benzino and the Source did themselves few favours by going against Eminem in the way they did, with hip hop figures such as Russel Simmons defending Marshall and one time enemies XXL using the opporunity to side with Eminem to further their posistion. Major record label Interscope, followed by Virgin and Def Jam also added insult to injury by pulling all advertising from the Source.
Benzino's next single was 'Look into my eyes', a claim which advertised itself as a track response to 'Like Toy Soldiers' but bar a line or two referring to Eminem is was clear this was taking advantage of the situation and Slims position. The Source has Since paid out a large sum of money to Eminem over copyright infringement and Benzino has retired from the Source ...
Spoiler for Chris Palko - "Cage" and Eminem Beef:
A relatively minor beef which kicked off soon after Eminem released the Slim Shady EP. Despite receiving a negative response from the Infinite album due to people claiming Em sounded to much like Nas, an underground Ney York Bred rapper who goes by the name of Cage, claimed Eminem had stolen his style and rhymes. In the words of Cage himself, the beef "started because he [Eminem] is a bitch ass nigga! Right now it stands with me kicking in his fucking face, real horror show, I ain't letting all the shit he said slide".What followed was a bunch of subliminal and not quite so subliminal disses thrown back and forth between the two artists. Eminem opted for a sarcastic and teasing approach with lyrics such as "Went on stage and sprayed Cage wit Agent Orange And wiped my ass wit his page in Source" ( Agent Orange being a title to a Cage Track ) and "Bought Cage's tape, opened it and dubbed over it" which can be found on the track 'Role Model' on the 'Slim Shady LP'.
Cage followed with the track 'The Illest four letter word' and perhaps its a coincidence the lyrics do remind us of a certain someone: "I'll stab you in the face, ten times in the same place". A freestyle by Eminem which appeared on Tony Touch's Power Cypha 3 - 50 MC's contained a direct response to cage with the line "I write a rhyme a day, So it's no wonder how come your whole album is sounding like a bunch of shit that I would say". A scream of 'Cage' in the background making it clear who is being referred to here.
A while later Cage released a track surprisingly going at Aftermath, commencing with "I stole Dre Day from Doctor Dre". The issue then quickly died down and by the release of the 'Marshall Mathers LP', was pretty nonexistent. Nothing has been said relating to the other since and its safe to say its the last we'll hear from the rivals.
Spoiler for Erik Schrody aka Whitey Ford - "Everlast" and Eminem Beef:
One of the rawest Beefs Eminem lead was that with previously House of Pain band member 'Everlast'. A beef that resulted in both artists taking things arguably to a personal level which questions the limits of hip hop rivalry. In the eyes of Eminem the beef started when Everlast had begun throwing verbal shots at Mr Mathers in interviews and such due to him walking past Whitey in a lobby "like I ain't noticed you, bitch I had a show to do".The first shot was by Everlast while with Dialated Peoples in a track called 'Ear Drums Pop' in which the subliminal 'I buck a .380 on those that act Shady' was thrown. This was around the time of the Anger Management Tour and upon hearing of the track Eminem wrote what would become 'I remember'. The track was on the B-side of the 'Shit On You' single, a parody of the musical orientation which Everlast had chosen to follow, pulling out all stops by referring to his heart problems, the failure of 'House of Pain' and ultimately putting the hatred down to being jealous of Slim.
The beef caused chaos in St Andrews Hall, Detroit while Everlast was throwing a gig, he challenged the crowd by asking if there's anyone from the Shady Camp wanting to battle, then insulting the rapper by calling him a midget and dissing his group D12. An audience member then leapt on stage and questioned the crowd over why there gonna let Everlast come to the D and diss Eminem? Next a fight broke out in which 3 people were sent to hospital and the show came to an end. Everlast also got a beating, though of a different kind in the Slim Shady Show in which he got jumped, though we can report Everlast never actually sustained any injuries.
A released statement from Tommy Boy Records which Everlast was signed to claimed Eric had found the track 'I remember' amusing, though this was a clear tease while he was writing a come-back. The return to came in the form of 'Whiteys Revenge', a slow-tempo heavy, luring track from Everlast which equaled the complete lack of respect by suggesting that Eminem better 'Go and check your kid for your DNA' and putting forward a physical battle. Ever getting the last word in, Eminem with support from D12 responded with the track 'Quitter', a 2 part instrumental which premieres with a dark hounding beat which switches mid-way to 2pacs 'Hit Em Up'.
Within the track Eminem states "He can't rap or sing but wants to do both" and D12 throw shots further degrading the character of Everlast. The track was followed up by 'Searching for Bobby Fishcher' from Everlast which went relatively unheard of and not soon after the beef fizzled out and Eminem prepared himself for jumping into the next beef he'd find himself in ....
Spoiler for Fred Durst "Limp Bizkit" and Eminem Beef:
The Eminem and Everlast feud has expanded to include Eminem's one-time friends Fred Durst and DJ Lethal of Limp Bizkit. Eminem has some choice and predictably profane words for the pair on "Girls," a track from the group D-12's album Devil's Night. Eminem is apparently upset about a comment Lethal made in December during the Limp guys' visit to "TRL." Lethal, who was in House of Pain with Everlast but was also friends with Eminem, at first said of their beef, "They're both men, they'll work it out." But he added that if the two were to take their differences outside the realm of their respective records, "Everlast would definitely win, you know what I mean?". Eminem has retaliated with "Girls," his third volley in his war of the words with Everlast. Lethal was supposed to guest on "Quitter," one of Eminem and D-12's Everlast-dissing songs, which calls on fans to physically attack the former House of Pain MC. Lethal bowed out, inspiring Em to call him and Durst "cowards" and "sissies" on "Girls," and ridicule their hit "Rollin'". Later in the song, Eminem claims he left Durst hanging on purpose when the red-capped singer tried to give him a high five at the MTV Video Music Awards in September, though Em claimed his reason for dissing Durst and Lethal is for comments Lethal made two months later. Eminem also allied himself with Limp Bizkit when he attacked Everlast on the D-12 B-side, "Shit on You," which was released in October, and "Quitter," released in December.
