Awalnya keempat anggota S/mileage merupakan bagian dari Hello! Pro Egg, yang memfokuskan pada training anggotanya sebelum didebutkan sebagai grup / penyanyi solo, meskipun tidak semua anggota mendapat kesempatan untuk tampil dan debut. Pada tanggal 4 April 2009, Tsunku menulis di blognya tentang rencana membuat sebuah grup dari Hello! Pro Egg dan sebulan kemudian tepatnya pada tanggal 8 Mei rencana tersebut diwujudkan. Dibentuk sebuah grup bernama S/mileage yang merupakan gabungan dari kata Smile dan Mileage, dengan perkiraan artinya adalah usia tersenyum. Saat itu juga Tsunku mengumumkan bahwa ada kemungkinan pergantian anggota Egg pada grup ini jika dirasakan belum sempurna.

S/mileage merilis single indie pertamanya aMa no Jaku pada Juni 2009. Selain itu, aktivitas S/mileage bertambah dengan menjadi backdancer dari penyanyi solo H!P, Mano Erina. S/mileage menjadi backdancer untuk single Mano Erina Hajimete no Keiken hingga Love & Peace = Paradise. Total merilis empat single indie pada dua tahun, akhirnya S/mileage mendapatkan kesempatan untuk debut sebagai grup major H!P dengan tantangan harus mengumpulkan 10.000 senyuman dalam tenggat waktu beberapa minggu. S/mileage lulus dari Hello! Pro Egg pada 27 Maret 2010 dengan tidak ada perubahan formasi anggota seperti rencana awal Tsunku.

Tantangan 10.000 senyuman berhasil dipecahkan, pada akhir Mei mereka berhasil mengumpulkan lebih dari 10.000 senyuman yang ditempel pada sebuah papan berukuran 2×4 meter. Pada bulan April, tepatnya saat hari terakhir tur joint konser Mano Erina & S/mileage, diumumkan bahwa S/mileage akan debut major pada bulan Mei dan selanjutnya akan melakukan tur konser serta stage play. Single debut major pertama S/mileage, Yumemiru 15sai (Fifteen) dirilis pada tanggal 26 Mei 2010.

Japanese newspapers this morning included an article with the announcement and stated that Yuuka will be graduating in order to focus on her studies in order to get into University.
Official confirmation comes from Hello! Projects Official Website, along with comments from both Tsunku and Yuuka.

Yuukas graduation comes as a surprise. After so many changes in Hello! Project this year, no one expected another graduation. 2011 will be one of those years thats never forgotten in Hello! Projects history.
S/mileages 12th single Please Miniskirt Postwoman! will be released on Yuukas birthday, December 28th. Just 3 days before her graduation.
S/mileage used to be one of my favourite groups but after losing Ogawa Saki earlier this year and addition of the the new members this Spring. I have slowly begun to loose interest. Since Sakis gradation, Yuuka has been my favourite.
This is a sad day, graduation news is the worst :-(.

She'll be having her last live event on 27 August, and then she'll be leaving the idol world for good to become a regular middle school student. She won't be having any special graduation ceremony either, probably because this is a very last-minute announcement.

This one of the saddest graduation announcements, to me. I haven't felt so sad about a Hello! Project graduation, because this is just so abrupt and out of the blue. Lately, fans have been observing that Saki and the rest of S/mileage haven't quite been themselves lately. I'm not trying to be cryptic or anything, but Saki really doesn't seem to be as happy-go-lucky as she normally is. She cried so much during the audition announcements and member announcements, maybe it was because she knew she was leaving and she felt like it was so hard to let go.

It appears that Saki has been speaking about it to the staff for quite a while, and she asked Tsunku to let her quit. It seems like she really wants to go back to being a regular student.

Whatever it is, I really want Saki to remain happy. I want her to look back on the days she had with S/mileage with a smile, and not feel any regret about the seven years she's had in Hello! Project. I will miss her a lot; even though she wasn't one of my very favourites, I've always loved Saki's natural smile, her entertaining personality, and her amazing vocals. She truly has one of the best vocals in Hello! Project, and she's only so young.

I'll really miss her! The graduation's happening so fast, I can't get used to it. But I want to be happy for Saki's sake, happy for the precious time and effort she's given to her friends in S/mileage and to us fans.

That's for Saki. Another reason I'm sad: This is really the last of 4-nin S/mileage. Now one of them is graduating, and S/mileage won't be the same from here on. I know Morning Musume is like that too, but it's just different for S/mileage. I've supported S/mileage since before their debut when they formed, the fans have watched them grow into an amazing group.

I always thought of S/mileage as the superb group, four girls each with their unique personalities. Unlike the other groups, they never had any graduations or additions, they were still whole and tight. I accepted the new members, but this time it's really going to be one member short. Still, change is always in the air isn't it?

Whatever it is, I'll support S/mileage forever too.

This is Tsunku's comment, made on his official blog:

Thank you for always supporting Hello! Project and myself.

In the beginning of May this year, she informed me,
Ive been hesitant for some time, and Ive discussed it with the staff a few times, but my feelings of wanting to return to a normal junior high student has strengthened, so please let me quit.

Although she is the youngest of the group, I have relied on her singing skills.

However, right now is the time to be looking towards the future.
As a group, and as an individual member, we need to have a strong desire for improvement.
And as a producer, I decided that holding back a member who is hesitant, and continuing the group with her would not be good for both the member and the group. So I chose to accept Ogawas request.

When the group was first formed, I made a public announcement that the unit may increase or decrease in members.
Because there was this case, I hastily announced in June that we would be recruiting new members for S/mileage.
Please forgive me that I wasnt able to report the details and intentions until now, as there were many terms and conditions concerning the group and the contract.

Again, Ogawa is still an inexperienced student and a minor.
For a working adult, it would be unacceptable to give up their job halfway.
But please take her straightforward feelings into careful consideration, and watch over her warmly.

With that, please continue your favors towards S/mileage.

Thank you for always supporting me.

I, Ogawa Saki will graduate from Hello! Project and S/mileage on August 27th.

After making our major debut last May, I have enjoyed every day as [a part of] S/mileage.
But somewhere in my heart, the real me and my S/mileage self become distant.
I discussed it with the staff a few times, but I was always troubled. I thought that it would be bad for S/mileage if I was hesitant while everyone else was working with all their might, so I decided to return to being a normal girl.

Im sorry for the last minute announcement.

I do feel sad, but S/mileages trademark is to always smile!

I will do my best to finish with a smile until the end of the event on August 27th. The remaining time is short, but please support me!

After I graduate, I want to continue supporting S/mileage with its new members.

Thank you for all of your support until now.

Due to the nature of her illness she will no longer be a part of S/mileage, but Tsunku has extended her an offer of becoming a Hello! Project Egg if she gets better and can return to work in the entertainment industry.
Since Fuyuka has only been a member for 3 weeks, I hardly know her, so I cant feel too emotional about it. Theres some awful part of me thats saying, thats what they get for taking her over Miyazaki, or one of the other auditioners. But really, I didnt hate the girl and wish her a speedy recovery.
With her departure, S/mileage is down to 4 sub-members and 3 real members. Theyre dropping like flies! I do hope that things look up for this group, because even though I dont care for the changes it has undergone recently, I still want them to be good and successful.
On a more positive note, there is a short radio preview of S/mileages next single, Tachiagaaru, up on Youtube, and Fuyuka is still present in it, somewhere. The song is fairly decent (although not Uchouten Love level) and the sound of the group has not changed. Seems like the sub members are mostly just on the unison parts, although I think I can hear Akari sing like, half a line, anyway.
Since Fuyuka does appear in the new single despite her health issues, her fans can look forward to her only release with S/mileage. Good luck to her on future endeavors, and I hope she gets better soon.
