Lecture 5: Offshore Fixed Platform Project & Design Phase
Offshore Fixed Platform Project & Design Phase
In oil and gas industry, there are some significant different between civil infrastructure and oil and gas infrastructure. Typically, in oil and gas, it consists of several project phases which are:
Phase 1 : Appraisal, to develop Plan of Development (POD) after exploration activities (drilling and geophysical surveying)
Phase 2 : Front End Engineering Design (FEED) or Concept Selection.
In this phase, Company will involve following steps in all disciplines of project such as process, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation in addition to structural engineering. Sometime, it is known as preliminary design. During this phase, Company will perform several activities as follows:
- Collection process data and identifying needs and equipment.
- Preliminary equipment sizing and area requirements
- Weight estimation based on past projects
- Identification of structural configurations
- Preliminary estimation of structural weight
- Identification of installation methods
The data collected during FEED will be further verified to make sure the authenticity and reliability of such data for further use. A Design Basis will be developed for the proposed facility.
Phase 3 : Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC). D
etailed design of offshore platform will be initiated once the basic design confirms the economic viability and technical feasibility. In the detailed design/engineering of an offshore platform following items of the jacket and deck will be developed in detail, such as: framing plans, framing elevations, joint details, plate girder details, pile make-up, appurtenances, etc.
The following detailed design analysis as minimum should be carried out:
- Inplace
- Loadout
- Sea transportation
- Lifting
- Free floatation
- Upending
- Dynamic
- Fatigue
- On Bottom Stability
- Pile Driveability
- Ship Impact
Pre-commisioning and commisioning will commence once the facility are installed at offshore prior to hand over to the Company.
Phase 4 : Operation.
In this phase, all activities are taken care by Company.
Phase 5 : Abandon.
The entire facilities should be abandoned once the field has not sufficient to produce much hydrocarbon and the service life of the facilities are ended.
