The CO2CRC have put out a new videoon their research into carbon capture and storage technologies. The video is an excellent overview of some of the technology involved in post-combustion and pre-combustion CO2 capture CCS.

The CO2CRC Otway Project the video briefly mentions is a carbon storage demonstration project in the Otway basin, Victoria. It involves pumping CO2 from a natural source, storing it underground and monitoring the process.

Post-combustion carbon capture and storage is being heavily researched as it will allow capture technology to be fitted to existing coal-fired burning power plants. The most common technology currently employed uses solvents to capture CO2, however the video explores the use of membranes and adsorbents as well. This is being investigated as part of the International Power and H3 projects within the Latrobe Valley post-combustion capture project.The post-combustion process is animated here.

Pre-combustion involves gasifying coal first to ultimately produce a purer CO2 stream which is easier to capture. CO2CRC is performing Australia’s first research trial at Mulgrave.he pre-combustion process is also animated here.
