Due to US and European sanctions, Russia imports Chinese Loongson CPUs!
At the end of 2022, the Chinese government banned the export of Loongson's latest LS5000 series CPU to Russia on the grounds of national security. However, in March 2023, the United States placed Loongson on its entity blacklist, restricting its access to US technology. This may be the reason why the Chinese government decided to lift the Loongson CPU export ban. According to Kommersant, at least two Russian companies plan to produce systems based on Loongson.

Russian companies Norsi-Trans and Promobit are preparing to build servers, storage systems and computers using Loongson 5000 series processors. So far, Norsi-Trans has purchased approximately 100 Loongson processors for the initial production phase, and it has also received permission to include Loongson in the official Russian electronics register.

These Russian technology companies view Loongson processors as a viable alternative to similar American products such as AMD and Intel. But there's one potential hiccup: software support. Norsi-Trans will cooperate with Alt operating system developer Basalt SPO to make its operating system work seamlessly with Loongson processors, but it is unclear when Basalt SPO will tailor the operating system for Loongson's CPUs.

The decision of Russian companies to choose Loongson processors is based on strategic considerations. The Chinese government had previously restricted exports of these Loongson processors because of their critical technological significance, including applications in China's military-industrial complex, and the easing of those export restrictions coincided with rising geopolitical tensions. Essentially, Norsi-Trans and Prombit want to build a more self-sufficient technology ecosystem that is less vulnerable to U.S. and EU sanctions and supply chain disruptions.

"Since the X86 and Arm architectures are controlled by the US and UK governments, there are always connection interruptions or processor operating errors," IVK CEO Grigory Sizonink said in an interview with Kommersant. potential risks, so Loongson chips look more attractive."

However, Russian industry experts expressed caution about this cooperation. Although Russia has reduced its reliance on American technology, the move may lead to new dependence on Chinese technology. Russoft President Valentin Makarov and other industry insiders emphasized the need to negotiate with Chinese partners on mutual market and technology access to ensure relatively balanced technological exchanges and cooperation between China and Russia.

Makarov said: "We will replace our dependence on American manufacturers with dependence on Chinese manufacturers. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct in-depth negotiations with Chinese partners on the entry of Russian IT products into the Chinese market or the acquisition of Chinese technology."
