Autopsy: George Floyd was on meth and marijuana, had coronavirus



George Floyd, the 46-year-old Minneapolis man killed while being arrested by police had several kinds of narcotics in his system at the time of his death, and had been infected with the coronavirus.

According to the full autopsy report which was released Wednesday evening, Floyd, who died on May 25th while being pinned down on the neck by then-Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin, had been infected with the COVID-19 novel coronavirus more than a month before the arrest.

On April 3rd, Floyd had tested positive for the coronavirus, and a post-mortem nasal swab confirmed that he had been infected.

"The result most likely reflects asymptomatic but persistent…positivity from previous infection,” the report said.

The autopsy’s toxicology report also found that Floyd had taken the opioid fentanyl, a powerful painkiller, as well as methamphetamines – a powerful and addictive drug also known as crystal meth – as well as cannabis.

Floyd was suffering from heart disease, hypertension, and was a carrier for the sickle cell trait.

Neither Floyd’s pre-existing health conditions nor the drugs found in his system were listed as causes of death.

The twenty-page autopsy report, released by Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office, found Floyd’s death was the result of homicide.

During his arrest on May 25th, Floyd was pinned down for nearly nine minutes, during which time he told arresting officers he was unable to breathe.

In video of the arrest, officer Chauvin can be seen using his knee to apply pressure to Floyd’s neck, even after Floyd became unresponsive.

Chauvin and three other officers involved in the arrest have been fired from the police department, arrested. Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder, after initially being charged with third-degree murder, while the other three officers have been charged with aiding and abetting.
