Average Indonesian people are very poor. Their GDP per capita is around $3600, and on metric it is similar to Vietnam and Philippines. The country is rich in natural beauty, with thousands of small tropical islands, nice beaches, and an abundance of forests and wildlife like elephants, orangutans and tigers. However, due to political instability, high levels of crime and terrorism and poor infrastructure they do not get much tourism or foreign investment compared to many neighboring countries.

I visited the capital, Jakarta once about 20 years ago. I was surprised by the huge disparity between the haves and the have-nots. While I stayed in a plush 4-star hotel, there were shoe-less, homeless beggars everywhere. Jakarta also had a serious litter/pollution problem.
