Pre-Islamic Java saw the blooms of local religions. Java has two largest ethnics, Javanese that inhabits Central and Eastern parts of Java and Sundanese that inhabits the Western parts of Java.



Kejawen (also called Kebatinan during New Order Era) is a religion of Javanese people that consists of amalgam of animism, Buddhism, and Hinduism. It was born in pre-Islamic period, although later in received so many Islam influences.

Kejawen combines human wisdom (wicaksana), psyche (waskita) and perfection (sempurna). It has no certain prophets or sacred books.

Sunda Wiwitan is a religion of Sundanese people with similar mixture with the former one (animism, Buddhism, Hinduism), but it is totally different religion.

Meanwhile, Dewi Kanti is a prominent figure of Sunda Wiwitan.



She fights for the recognition of Sunda Wiwitan as Indonesia’s official religion.
