‘Explosion’ causes panic at Bayside Shopping Centre in Frankston
Fire crews are at the scene of a small explosion and fire at the Bayside Shopping Centre in Frankston, which is just south of Melbourne, officials and witnesses say. It is not related to the car attack in Melbourne.
The incident happened just after 7 p.m. local time on Thursday when emergency services were called to multiple reports of "explosions" or "loud bangs" at the shopping center, which is located on Beach Street in Frankston.
The Country Fire Authority confirmed that they were responding to reports of exploding gas cylinders, which caused a relatively small fire. The mall was immediately evacuated and the incident caused some panic, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.
"There were three loud bangs. There were flames. People were running everywhere," a witness told 3AW radio.
Multiple fire crews responded to the scene but there was no indication of a link to the attack in Melbourne, where a car deliberately ran over pedestrians, injuring 14 people. The all-clear was given just before 8 p.m. and shoppers were seen entering the shopping center.
