Bali First, Traveloka Never
(9/18/2017)

Traveloka - one of Indonesia’s leading online travel agencies is the object of considerable public anger following the installation of a large permanent outside advertisement on Bali’s popular Sanur beach bearing the message “Traveloka First, Then Sanur Beach.”

Earning criticism from both visiting tourists and local residents who saw the sign an unsightly intrusion on the beachfront, complaints quickly surfaced on social media.

As reported by RadarBali.com, suggestions also surfaced that Rp. 1 billion was paid by the advertising company for permission to install the advertising structure.

Prompted by the uproar, a member of Commission III of the Denpasar House of Representatives (DPRD-Denpasar) visited Sanur Beach on Thursday, Septemb, r 14, 2017 to confirm the sign was in place.

The legislator, unhappy with what he saw, asked on behalf of the House for the sign to be immediately removed. The Commission III member said the sign had been installed with proper prior consultation of the traditional head of the local community (Bendesa Adat Sanur Kaja).

Local residents in Sanur are said to be outraged by the advertising installed on a scenic public beach.

The chairman of Commission III, Eko Supriadi, in the company of village elders, led the visit by legislators. Upon arrival on the beach, the group encountered the large sign installation. The sign had a one-month permit ending on September 20, 2017, but the installation appeared permanent in nature.

Further investigation by lawmakers revealed the signboard was approved by the Traditional Village Corporation (Badan Usaha Milik Desa Adat Sanur-BUMDAS) and that decision was made without consultation with the village hierarchy as a whole.

When villagers became aware of the agreement to install the sign on the beach, Gede Sudiarta of the BUMDAS was dismissed from his job effective September 13, 2017. A decision has also been made to demolish the signboard that people generally agree desecrates the panoramic beach.

Similar signs with a similar theme have been installed by Traveloka in other locations, including Kuta.

In meantime, Traveloka’s boorish tagline of “Traveloka First, Then Sanur Beach” may have boomeranged. While the outlandish sign is being removed from Sanur Beach, some consumers claim they are adopting the mantra of “Sanur and Bali First. Traveloka Never.”
