10 jobs with surprisingly high (or low) salaries in 2017
Certain jobs pay more than others. But some jobs pay a little bit more or less than you might think.

Glassdoor, a job search and career information company, keeps track of how much people are getting paid in various positions within the U.S. workforce. Perusing the various figures, some salary averages seem to jump out as being a bit higher or a bit lower than one might expect.

For a list of ten jobs whose salaries might seem a tad more or less than one might assume, check out our slideshow above. All median annual salaries are accurate as of July 2017.

One position that pays perhaps a bit more than most people might estimate is that of pharmacist. On average, in the United States, the median salary for someone in that role is $124,443. Keep in mind that becoming a pharmacist takes a lot of study and accreditation. People with the job have to oversee pharmacy operations, keeping track of controlled substances and maintaining a record of prescriptions all important to patients with ailments. It’s a big responsibility, to say the least.

In that same space is another role that earns its practitioners perhaps a bit less than you would think: pharmacy technicians. These are the folks who fill prescriptions and generally deal with the customer. According to Glassdoor’s numbers, these technicians earn a median annual salary of $30,543—that’s up 3.9% over last year.

Restaurant cook’s in the United States make an average median salary of $28,696. Now, nobody expects line cooks to be raking in six figures every year, but given the amount of stress, hot and sweaty working conditions and weird hours they have to deal with; one might expect them to be earning more. Remember, the cooks on the line are not pulling in tips, as their colleagues on the wait staff do.

Speaking of folks working tough jobs for little pay, it might surprise some to know that emergency medical technicians earn a median annual wage of $34,038. These workers travel in ambulances to administer first aid and sometimes life-saving treatment to those who need it most—almost always in time-sensitive situations. The stresses and importance – not to mention the skills required – might lead many to feel that EMTs make more than they actually do.

One role whose salary is certainly up for debate is that of the vice president of the United States. VP Mike Pence earns a $230,700 a year. To many, that would be a fantastic wage, but his is arguably the second most powerful position in the world’s most powerful nation. Is his paycheck too low, too high or just right? Keep in mind that many private sector executives earn much higher wages every year than Pence does, and that’s before bonuses role in and stock options mature.

The good news for Pence is that his job carries with it perks that most other positions do not: he has access to a tricked-out Boeing 757, a 33-room 19th century mansion to live in with his family, and an office in the west wing of The White House.
