China's second carrier to be launched soon, says MND

China's first locally built aircraft carrier is currently being outfitted at the Dalian shipyard in northeastern China and will be launched soon, according to the Ministry of National Defence (MND) in Beijing.

"Relevant work is forging ahead very smoothly," said MND spokesperson Senior Colonel Wu Qian during a 30 March press conference.

Asked about speculation in media reports that China's second carrier, commonly referred to as the Type 001A, will be commissioned on 23 April - the day marking the 68th anniversary of the founding of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) - the spokesperson said, "We won't keep the public waiting for too long.
