Indonesian army destroy 'halfwit' tiger statue
"Sometimes the artist was not that good," the military says (Vincent Candra / Twitter)
It was supposed to be a symbol of military might, but instead it became a laughing stock online.

The tiger statue was built to be a mascot for the Siliwangi Military Command, whose logo is a snarling tiger.

Unfortunately, the artist was "not that good", and what was supposed to be a ferocious beast turned out to be comical, and possibly inbred.

The tiger - known as macan cisewu, or laughing tiger - attracted attention after its visage was posted to social media.

Commenters joined in the fun by questioning the sculptor's artistic talent and sobriety, and the tiger's intelligence.

"Third world countries don't get nice things," one person said.

However the Indonesian Army quickly tired of the mocking, and made the decision to destroy the statue.

Siliwangi military commander Major General Herindra told the BBC that the statue had been "made long time ago in Cisewu district".

"Every unit has their own decision on how the statue was made, but sometimes the artist was not that good."

Fortunately the tiger will live on in in the world of memes.

"RIP macan cisewu, now up there with Harambe and the other legends in heaven," one person wrote.

Maj Gen Herindra said the military was examining other statues in the regions, to see if any others failed to lived up with their unit's emblems.

"If some of them are not good, we will change them," he told the BBC.

Indonesian army destroys much-mocked tiger statue

The Indonesian army has demolished a tiger statue in front of a base in West Java after it became a laughing stock online.
The grinning tiger in a small village in Garut was supposed to be a mascot for the Siliwangi Military Command.
But internet users found it hilarious because it was so different from the fierce tiger on official logos.
"I don't know why, but every time I see its face, I laugh... buahaha," said one Facebook user.
The tiger had been in place for several years, but only recently found internet fame.

Vincent Candra told the BBC he had laughed a lot when he saw the picture of the tiger and decided to share it on Twitter.
It has since travelled across social media and made its way into the national media.
Many have poked fun at the tiger's cartoonish appearance, while others edited it into film posters and surreal scenarios. Other people uploaded more weird looking tiger statues they had seen in front of army bases.
"I didn't expect it will go viral," said Vincent. "I felt sad when I found out that the statue was destroyed."

Other "ugly" tiger statues have emerged on social media.
On Monday, the army moved in to put the tiger out of its misery, demolishing it with chisels.
Siliwangi military commander Maj Gen Herindra told the BBC the statue had been "made long time ago in Cisewu district".
"Every unit has their own decision on how the statue was made, but sometimes the artist was not that good."
People who had been enjoying the humour online instead expressed grief.
"RIP Cisewu tiger, thank you for entertaining us," said one Twitter user.

Some even put the smiley tiger with Harambe and other famous stars 'in heaven'.

One had an alternative suggestion, saying it would have been better to "move it into the zoo, so children can take selfies with it".
A parody Facebook page, Indonesia's Humour Ministry [or Kementerian Humor Indonesia] said a lot of people were "broken hearted".
As one of first sites to share the photo last week, they said they felt "a bit guilty" that it had now gone.
So they made a special "goodbye cartoon" to remind everyone of its unique grinning face.

"We will miss (your) smiley face," wrote this post.
Gen Herindra said the army would be looking at other statues in the region to see if they are "consistent with the original [military] emblem".
"If some of them are not good, we will change them," he said.
But he also promised a new tiger statue would be installed at the Siliwangi base, which was "more similar" to the command's logo.

The tiger's cheesy grin led to affectionate mockery online Vincent Candra
The Indonesian army has demolished a tiger statue at a base in West Java after its cartoonish appearance became fodder for internet memes.
The grinning wooden mascot in a village in Garut was meant to represent the Siliwangi Military Command, whose logo is a fearsome, roaring tiger's head.
The statue was put in place some years ago but only recently gained fame online, the BBC reported.
Social media users have mocked its cheesy grin, inserting it into movie posters, while the parodic Indonesian Humour Ministry Facebook page declared its sadness for the tiger's passing.

It "will always be remembered" for its "cheerful" face, said a post on the Kementrian Humor Indonesia page depicting the statue as an angel ascending to heaven, being saluted by a tearful soldier.
Siliwangi military commander Maj Gen Herindra told the BBC: "Every unit has their own decision on how the statue was made, but sometimes the artist was not that good."

Funny looking’ tiger statue removed by military after torrent of online humiliation

They might have weapons but it seems the Indonesian military don’t have a sense of humor after removing a statue of a tiger from a military base for “looking funny.” The famed statue became the subject of an internet meme due to its cartoon-like features.
Known as the ‘Cisewu Tiger’, the statue was removed on Monday after standing proud above the West Java military base for six years. The tiger is supposed to represent the mascot for the Siliwangi Military Command but his features have been deemed more welcoming than threatening.
"Tigers should look fierce because they represent bravery and resilience," military spokesman Mokhamad Desi Arianto told AFP. "When some people criticized the statue for looking funny, we couldn't ignore it."

The tiger recently became the subject of ridicule online and the subject of internet memes after garnering attention for its smiling face. Some very skilled Photoshop users skillfully placed the ‘Cisewu Tiger into movie posters and their own lives.
