Mesir memiliki sejarah yang sangat panjang dalam peradaban dunia. Mesir selalu menjadi rebutan penguasa dunia karena kekayaan alamnya, sungai Nil yang legendaris. Kerajaan-kerajaan yang pernah menguasai Mesir diantaranya Mesir kuno dengan Firaunnya, kerajaan Yunani dengan Alexander, Romawi, Khulafaur Rasyidin, Abbasiyah, Fathimiyah, Utsmani dan lain-lain.
Islam masuk ke Mesir pada tahun 640 M. Pada awal-awal peradaban Islam di Mesir, ibu kotanya bukanlah Kairo akan tetapi Fustat.
Pada bulan Agustus 969 M, jenderal Jawhar dari “kekhalifahan” Fathimiyah yang beraliran Syiah menaklukkan Fustat. Ia memerintahkan pasukannya untuk membangun istana bagi “khalifah” Fatimiyah di sebelah timur laut Fustat. Tempat dibangunnya istana ini selanjutnya dinamai Al Qahirah (yang berarti “Kemenangan”).
