Siapa itu Jack The Ripper?
Jack the Ripper adalah julukan yang diberikan kepada seorang pembunuh berantai yang tidak dikenal dan beroperasi di daerah miskin atau di sekitar White Chapel, London, pada tahun 1888. Nama "Jack The Ripper" berasal dari sebuah surat yang ditulis oleh seseorang yang mengaku sebagai pembunuh dan nama Jack The Ripper disebarkan oleh media sehingga masyarakat luas pun mengetahuinya. Surat tersebut dipercaya sebagai lelucon, dan mungkin bisa saja ditulis oleh wartawan dalam upaya untuk meningkatkan minat masyarakat untuk membaca dan membeli koran. Pembunuh tersebut dikenal sebagai "the Whitechapel Murderer" atau "Leather Apron" di dalam berkas-berkas yang dimiliki oleh polisi.

Penyerangan yang dianggap berasal dari Jack The Ripper biasanya melibatkan pramuria yang tinggal dan bekerja di daerah miskin di East End of London biasanya korbannya memiliki luka gorok di leher dan perut yang dibuka (dimutilasi). Pengambilan organ internal dari 3 korbannya memberikan petunjuk bahwa pembunuhnya memiliki pengetahuan anatomi tubuh atau bedah. Rumor pembunuhan yang bersangkutan diperkuat pada bulan September dan Oktober 1888, ketika surat yang diterima oleh media dan Scotland Yard dari penulis yang mengaku sebagai pembunuh. Surat "From Hell" yang diterima oleh George Lusk dari Whitechapel Vigilance Committee termasuk setengah ginjal manusia yang diawetkan, yang diambil dari salah satu korbannya. Masyarakat umum semakin percaya bahwa ada seorang pembunuh berantai yang dikenal sebagai Jack The Ripper, terutama karena karakteristik pembunuh yang sangat brutal.

Sebuah penyelidikan polisi atas 11 pembunuhan brutal di Whitechapel hinggal tahun 1891 tidak dapat menghubungkan semua pembunuhan yang terjadi pada 1888. 5 korban - Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes, dan Mary Jane Kelly - dikenal juga sebagai 5 kanonikal dan pembunuhan mereka terjadi antara 31 Agustus dan 9 November 1888 sering dianggap yang paling mungkin terkait. Kasus pembunuhan ini tidak pernah terpecahkan pada masanya, dan legenda Jack The Ripper menjadi penelitian sejarah, cerita rakyat, dan pseudohistory. Istilah "ripperology" diciptakan untuk menggambarkan kasus Jack The Ripper. Dear Boss,

I keep on hearing the police have caught me but they wont fix me just yet. I have laughed when they look so clever and talk about being on the right track. That joke about Leather Apron gave me real fits. I am down on baiks and I shant quit ripping them till I do get buckled. Grand work the last job was. I gave the lady no time to squeal. How can they catch me now. I love my work and want to start again. You will soon hear of me with my funny little games. I saved some of the proper red stuff in a ginger beer bottle over the last job to write with but it went thick like glue and I cant use it. Red ink is fit enough I hope ha. ha. The next job I do I shall clip the ladys ears off and send to the police officers just for jolly wouldn't you. Keep this letter back till I do a bit more work, then give it out straight.
