Originally airing in July 2004, Fafner is a sci-fi mecha anime. The story follows Kazuki Makabe, pilot of the giant robot Fafner. Using the Fafner, he must protect his home, the secluded Tatsumiya Island, from alien invaders called Festum. Many challenges arise and only Kazuki and his friends can make their island a paradise once again. Produced by Studio XEBEC (Love Hina, Nadesico) and directed by Nobuyoshi Habara (DN Angel), with character designs by Hisashi Hirai (Gundam SEED, Infinite Ryvius) and mechanical designs by Naohiro Washio (Stellvia). The TV series was initially released on DVD in the U.S. by Geneon Entertainment, but has since been re-released by FUNimation. The prequel OVA Right of Left was released in 2005 in Japan only. In 2010, the movie Heaven and Earth debuted in Japanese theaters and has since been released by FUNimation. A new movie entitled Exodus is currently in the works.
Synopsis
Quote:
Tatsumiyajima is the central island in the middle of a small cluster of islands, in a sleepy backwater of the Japanese isles. Not much happens there, and the island's young people go to school knowing that their lives are likely to remain peaceful and undisturbed. Or so they have been taught...but the truth is different. The fate of mankind is on the line, and Tatsumiyajima is the last line of defense against a hostile and incomprehensible enemy. At the center of it all, fighting for Humanity's continued existence, is the giant robot Fafner, the dragon that guards this final treasure of mankind.
