Australian bringing stand-up comedy to China
In 2009, Andy Curtain finished his degree at the University of Melbourne and woke on a couch in Shanghai 24 hours later.

Australian bringing stand-up comedy to China

Young and ambitious, he had figured China, home to the world's fastest-growing economy, was the place to forge a career. He dreamt of a job in finance or business. He certainly did not expect to open the Chinese mainland's first comedy club.

"Finance," he laughs. "What was I thinking?"

Five years on, Curtain, 30, is the founder of Kung Fu Komedy, the Chinese mainland's only full-time comedy club. The club is based in Shanghai but tours comedians to 14 cities throughout the country, tapping into a growing thirst for live entertainment among expatriates and China's growing middle class. The club holds live shows five nights a week, tours nine international acts a year and hosts resident performers, who stay in the city for two-month stints.
