Escalating costs and delays have cast fresh doubts over plans for a fleet of new Royal Navy ships to replace Cold War-era Type 23 frigates.
A contract for 13 Type 26 vessels was due to be placed by the Ministry of Defence before Christmas, with construction work to go to BAE Systems’ shipyards on the Clyde.
According to The Sunday Times, the order was delayed due to wrangling over the ship’s growing sophistication and weight, which have driven up costs.
The Type 26 work was a key bargaining chip in the Scottish referendum after ministers consolidated shipbuilding on the Clyde and closed Portsmouth shipyard.
