War games to train army personnel for combat

KOTA KINABALU: Assault crafts and naval vessels were despatched to an island off east coast Lahad Datu following intelligence information of a planned attack by militants there.

Some 300 soldiers involved in the operation were heavily armed to prepare for any possibilities.

The armed forces received information saying that about 100 militants in four vessels would be landing near Lahad Datu and were planning a massive attack very soon.

The armed forces were despatched to thwart the intrusion.

This scenario is part of the army War Games to train personnel and officers in preparing for war and other conflicts.

The operation was held in Sabah’s east coast on Aug 17 and 18.

Among the training carried out were the “Night Encounter Exercise”, Manoeuvre Tacktics, damage prevention in fire fighting and so on.

These trainings were meant to test the armed forces’ operation assets and at the same time familiarise its personnel with maritime war knowledge.

A large-scale operation has been planned by end of this year to strengthen collaboration between security forces in safeguarding the east coast.

M’sia–US military exercise begins in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Malaysia and the United States kicked off a joint military exercise near a seaside settlement in Sabah’s east coast – the site of an intrusion by southern Philippines gunmen in February last year.

The nine-day Malaysia-US Amphibious Exercise 20 (MalUS Amphex 4) began on Monday at Kampung Tanduo in Lahad Datu district and will end on Sept 2.

A US embassy official said the exercise was aimed at improving the Malaysian and American security forces’ amphibious training, readiness and inter-operability.

The training includes shipboard familiarisation, medical and dental capabilities, weapons familiarisation, amphibious rehearsals with ship-to-shore connectors, live-fire ranges and rapid response planning process.

The exercise will see the execution of an amphibious assault and landing, and reconstitution.

The official said those involved included personnel from the 7th and 22nd Royal Malay Regiments as well as US marines and sailors from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group.

US military and Malaysian armed forces had partnered each other in counter-terrorism operations since 1985 and participated in numerous exercises over the years, added the official.

“MalUS Amphex 4 is a realistic and challenging exercise that brings service members closer and improves the two nations’ ability to work bilaterally,” he said.

“This better prepares both nations to provide regional and global security.”
