Pentagon looking at possible military options for Russia: US genera
Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey says the Pentagon is looking at possible military responses to Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
He said his country is considering military options such as US military “basing, lines of communications, sea lanes” that “we haven’t had to look at for 20 years."
During his address at the Aspen Institute on Thursday night, he warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin “may actually light a fire” he cannot control.
“This is very clearly Putin” attempting to “redress grievances for the fall of the Soviet Union,” Dempsey said.
He also noted that President Putin has “actually taken a decision to escalate,” adding this has sparked a “rising tide of nationalism” that could spread throughout Europe.
Dempsey made the remarks after the State Department accused Russia of firing artillery from its territory at Ukrainian military positions.
“It does change the situation. You’ve got a Russian government that has made a conscious decision to use its military force inside another sovereign nation to achieve its objectives. It’s the first time since 1939 or so that that’s been the case,” Dempsey said.
“They clearly are on a path to assert themselves differently not just in Eastern Europe, but Europe in the main, and towards the United States.”
The State Department has failed to back up its statement with any evidence.
"We have new evidence that the Russians intend to deliver heavier and more powerful multiple rocket launchers to separatist forces in Ukraine and have evidence that Russia is firing artillery from within Russia to attack Ukrainian military positions," State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said on Thursday.
"I can't tell you what the information is based on," Harf said.
However, Russia has denied the allegations.
"Unfortunately, it is not for the first time that we hear unproven allegations," a spokesman for the Russian embassy in Washington said. "In fact, it is the Russian territory that is being shelled from the Ukraine."
