Russia Counts on New Indonesian Presidents Cooperation

MOSCOW, July 23 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow is counting on the development of close ties between Russia and Indonesia, the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry said Wednesday.

“We count on the new government of Indonesia to continue the course on the development of traditionally friendly ties and multipronged cooperation, based on mutual trust and long-term shared interests of people of our countries,” the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry said.

The country’s Electoral Commission declared Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo Indonesia’s new president Tuesday, winning 53.15 percent, or more than 70 million, of the vote, and thus beating his rival, former General Prabowo Subianto by a margin of 8.4 million votes. In his first speech as president-elect, he called for Indonesians to unite after the heated elections.

Joko Widodo is due to take charge of the country of 240 million in October, when his predecessor, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, will step down after 10 years in office.
