[BARU TAU] New Zealand ternyata di ban Mamarika??
NZ Navy to be welcomed into Pearl Harbour after 30-year freeze

[BARU TAU] New Zealand ternyata di ban Mamarika??

For the first time in 30 years the Royal New Zealand Navy will be welcomed in Pearl Harbour for the biggest international military exercise in the world.

The last time New Zealand ships went to the Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC), they were banished to another port because of this country's anti-nuclear stance.

HMNZS Canterbury is not sailing into conflict, rather, to heal old wounds as it joins the maritime exercise.

"We've all been briefed on the background and the requirement for this to be seen as a keynote event in our history," says Commander David Turner, HMNZS Canterbury commanding officer.

The last time the New Zealand Defence Force sailed into Pearl Harbour was 1984.

Electronics officer Petty Officer Stuart Hair was in his mid-twenties, serving on the old frigate Canterbury.

"Canterbury was the last one to go into Pearl Harbour 30 years ago. And it's a privileged to be on Canterbury again 30 years later to go back in again," he says.

For 30 years, the New Zealand navy wasn't welcome because of the country's anti-nuclear stance.

Even at RIMPAC in 2012, Te Kaha and Endeavour weren't allowed to dock in Pearl Harbour.

This time though, New Zealand is fully back in the fold.

"We know as soon as we arrive in Pearl Harbour there'll be a lot of focus on the Canterbury and the New Zealand Defence Force," says Commander Turner.

RIMPAC happens every two years, near Hawaii. And it's huge with 23 countries, 40 ships and submarines, 200 aircraft and 25,000 people involved.

This year the exercise is all about disaster relief, something the new HMNZS Canterbury is well set up for.

"Basically it's a full hospital," says Petty Officer Aaron Gibbs, a medic on the Canterbury as he shows ONE News around the ship's medical facilities.

He explains two beds are used like an emergency department. There's also a full surgical suite in another area plus a blood bank. And two beds with ventilators form a high dependancy unit.

The Canterbury has plenty to offer as military co-operation with the US goes full steam ahead.
