Indonesia, North Korea look to boost military and defence ties

Indonesia and North Korea have agreed to explore potential collaboration across defence and military activities as part of burgeoning ties between the two nations.

The development - announced by the Indonesian Ministry of Defence (MoD) on 14 September - is indicative of the scale of both countries' commitment to diversifying defence partners in light of potential or existing sanctions.

The Indonesian MoD said Deputy Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and his counterpart from North Korea, Lieutenant General Kang Yong Pyo, had agreed during talks in Jakarta to expand bilateral efforts to co-operate in defence and military activities. The MoD did not elaborate but indicated that potential areas of collaboration included industrial, training/education and military-to-military exchanges.
