Native speakerism, what do you think?
I am not sure if a similar thread had been created, so if the mods or kaskusers find one, please guide me to that thread.
what do you think of native speakers teaching in Indonesia?
native teachers in indonesia have become a popular topic recently. many schools and universities employ them with a relatively higher salary than the local indonesian teachers. a native teacher may earn 11-15 million a month, compared to a local one who relatively earns 5-7 million a month. intellegence aside, do you think that employing native teachers is really worth the money?
they may be good as our reference for pronunciation and speaking partners, but they are not smarter in terms of techniques of teaching, encouraging and motivating students, or doing presentations than our local teachers. not all native teachers are actually good in teaching structures and grammars.
schools who employ native teachers usually benefit from their native status and use them as selling commodity to raise the fees and gain more profit from students. unfortunately, many indonesians still suffer from inferiority complex, which is a psychological disease which makes the person think that the grass on the other fence is always greener.
if you take a look at job website especially totalesl.com, there are many language institutions in indonesia who are seeking for native teachers. their requirements include a passport holders of australia, new zealand, england, usa, and other english-speaking countries, which means that their intellectual ability is second.
so, what do you think?
