Review by
Don't Starve is Klei Entertainment's latest venture and proof that the explore/survival genre is not in need of more voxels (or three-dimensional graphics, for that matter).Of course, there could be a little bit of personal bias talking here. Don't Starve looks and feels like a heady mix between Henry Selick and Tim Burton, a pop-up book for adults delivered with a distinctively Victorian air. If you loved the animated version of Neil Gaiman's Coraline, you're probably going to love this. But, let's get down to the nitty-gritty details.
Don't Starve is the story of intrepid Gentleman Scientist Wilson. Trapped in a peculiar world filled with savage (and not so savage) critters, he must (with your help) endeavor to survive, make use of his environment and possibly escape.Needless to say, it's not that easy. (Then again, are they ever?)Don't Starve opens with you being plunked down at a random location. From there, it's all up to you. Do you want to pick berries first or do you want to collect twigs? Do you immediately begin investing tools that will allow you to trap and murder poor, defenseless bunnies? The choice is yours. Whatever the case is, however, be certain to have a fire when night rolls in. Bad things will happen otherwise.
The interface is immensely simple. To interact with something, you simply need to left click it. If an action can be performed, it will be performed. No fuss, no mess. However, there are limitations. For example, hands are generally insufficient when it comes to things like enormous pine trees. In order to down the local trees, you're going to have acquire a sufficient number of ingredients in order to build a axe. Once you've accomplished that, you can then right-click to equip the axe and hack down some timber for yourself. Just don't forget to feed yourself (and be careful around angry spiderlings). And that, really, is the game in a nutshell.
Don't Starve wants you to, well, don't starve. It wants you to do everything you can to survive to the next day and the day after that. (It'll also let you make things like top hats and meat effigies but that's neither here and now.)Currently, the game is still early stages of development. To be precise, it's in 'closed' early-access beta. If you purchase the game now (it costs all of $6.99), you'll be able to access the beta and get an extra key for a friend. Of course, if you're unconvinced, you could also just check out the limited demo first.

Update 27 Nov 2012
Update 29 Nov 2012*patch/bug fixes
*pigs take longer to respawn from their houses
*gobblers spawn with a couple second delay
*grass tufts need manure to regrow
*pigs voraciously eat all food left on the ground
*golden tools are less OP (but still better than flint)
*red gems are a "sometimes loot"
*tallbird eggs aren't as filling/healing
*you can't place buildings and trees as close together, so that you can't build ad-hoc walls. You'll get real walls eventually, but for the meantime you'll probably want to invest in a pig-shield
*chests have no collision, because they're small, and chest fortresses are just plain weird
*fixed some disappearing backpack / item dupe exploits
*space bar won't attack non-hostiles by default (CTRL-spacebar will, though)
*fixed up some misc obscure lua crashes
*researching a red gem shouldn't crash
Update 30 Nov 2012*patch/bug fixes

GENERAL FIXES:

Tweaked the fire fuel values a bit (they were too high after the hot fixes)

Update 30 Nov 2012*patch/bug fixes
Spoiler for changelog:
FARMS
farm plots are fully fertilized when they are built
farm plots have much higher fertilizer capacity (used to be 6, now is 10,20,30)
Poop fertilizes farms more efficiently and speeds crop growth more efficiently
DEPLOYING / BUILDING
an unsuccessful deploy will not consume the deployable
chests can be placed closer together
non-colliding deployables can be placed closer together
twigs and grass to not become exhaustable until you transplant them (in existing saves, everything counts as not-yet-transplanted, because I wasn’t tracking this before)
transplanted grass is good for 20 cycles per poop
USING GRASS
fillers (other than twigs and petals) can no longer be used in the crock pot
traps can be used 10 times instead of 5
recipe changes to reduce grass usage:
Torch uses 1 less grass
Trap uses 2 less grass
Bugnet uses 1 less rope
farms cost less poop to make
Golden tools use 2 less gold
Panflute uses 1 less rope
rope uses 1 less grass

logsuit uses 2 less rope
spear uses 1 rope instead of 2 grass

MISC
Axe, pickaxe (and gold equivalents) last a bit longer
Minerhat lasts twice as long
Fire fueling values have been updated: (all times for campfire, x2 for firepit)
Grass gives 22.5 seconds of light
Logs give 75 seconds of light
PIGS
pigs don’t eat off the ground as often
pigs don’t eat mandrakes
pigs can be given veggiesmore often, and will refuse them if you try to do it too often
pig houses take 3 days to rebuild a dead pig
pigs drop either a meat or a pigskin (75%-25% split)
pigs, spider, and hounds can eat pigskins
