A mystery involving the Freemasons brings Robert Langdon back to the United States.

The Lost Symbol is an upcoming thriller film based on novel of the same name by author Dan Brown. It has been confirmed that Columbia Pictures will distribute the film, with a yet unannounced release date. The novel's story is the third with character Robert Langdon. In the film, he will be summoned to Washington, D.C., where he will be decoding the symbols of the Freemasons. Tom Hanks is expected to reprise his role as Langdon. Various people were asked to write the screenplay for the film, including Steven Knight and even Dan Brown himself, but as of March 2012, this role has been passed to Danny Strong.

The LA Times has posted some updates on the project which suggests that although we’re unlikely to see it anytime soon, it is coming along slowly. Danny Strong, who recently won a Golden Globe for his TV movie Game Change, has been attached to develop a script for the adaptation. His first draft is expected to arrive in the coming weeks, with pre-production expected to start this year. Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo) is to take the helm on this third Langdon film, replacing Ron Howard who directed both The Da Vinci Code and Angels & Demons.
Of course, the biggest issue is whether Tom Hanks will return to reprise his role as Langdon. He is certainly expected to, although Hanks’ schedule isn’t exactly the most free from commitment. He has just finished playing Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks, while he is also set to appear on stage in the late Nora Ephron’s Lucky Guy in April.
It’s probably safe to assume the studio bosses will wait to get Hanks onboard. The first two adaptations of Brown’s work racked in $1.2 billion, despite being pretty poorly reviewed. Much of this probably had to do with attaching a respectable big name star like Hanks to the project (although a little controversy with the Vatican probably helped too). LA Times
