43% Omzet Rosoboronexport di South East Asia
Russia wins new niches on global arms exports market

In 2012, the countries of South Eastern Asia and Asian Pacific region accounted for 43% of Russia’s arms exports, Anatoly Isaykin, general director of Russia's state-controlled arms trader Rosoboronexport says.

The countries Middle East, North Africa were the second largest market for Russia’s arms exports. They are followed by the countries of South America and the CIS. In 2012, the CIS graded up to China accounting for 12% of Russia’s arms exports. Igor Korotcheko, chief editor of the National Defense journal explains why Russian weapons are in great demand first of all in Asia.

"The conflict potential in the region is high due to unsolved territorial disputes around islands as well as part of the shelf where industrial production of oil and gas is probable. This makes many regional countries increase their military budgets. These factors keep the demand for Russian arms high. In recent years a lot of total package procurement contracts have been signed. First of all it is necessary to mention fighter aircraft. Diesel submarines are also in great demand. It is enough to mention the contract signed with Vietnam for the construction of 6 diesel submarines. Russia has been successfully exporting frigates, corvettes guided missile boats. Foreign clients also show great interest for Russian anti-aircraft systems and armored vehicles."

According to general director of Rosoboronexport Anatoly Isaykin, in 2012, three of 9 countries which plan to upgrade their submarine parks or create them showed interest in buying Amur 1650 non-nuclear submarine. We hear from military expert Viktor Barenets.

"Naturally it is a pleasure to see that foreign clients have their eyes on our products. This submarine is really worth buying it. In comparison with foreign submarines of similar class it has a high speed, good armament, low noisiness of water drive and it is also equipped with autonomous air intake system. Usually this is the weakest point of all diesel submarines which have to surface to recharge their accumulatorbatteries. That means they have to disclose themselves. The autonomous air intake system enables them to solve this problem."

In 2012, Syria ranked as 13 and 14 on the list of the exporters of Russian arms. Rosobornexport supplied anti-aircraft systems, maintenance vehicles to Syrian armed forces. Russia did not supply aviation equipment to Syria. Anatoly Isaykin stressed that the contract on supplying Yak-130 training and combat aircraft was not canceled but the supplies were suspended. He added that Russia had more commitments under contracts signed with Syria but did not elaborate saying that this information was confidential.

Anatoly Isaykin said that Rosoboronexport is now in talks with Mali discussing additional supplies of small arms. The last butch of small arms was supplied two weeks ago. Mali is also interested in buying armored vehicles and helicopters from Russia.
