What is Data Storytelling and why is important?

Today, organizations are gathering data at an incredible rate. In fact, you may now gather data on every area of your life and business. Despite the recent resurrection of technologies like BI tools, dashboards, and spreadsheets, organizations can still not fully capitalize on the opportunities concealed in their data.

Spreadsheets and dashboards only provide information on current events. However, they fail to explain why.

Spreadsheets, dashboards, and BI tools all have some restrictions:

Manual reporting and data manipulation are still commonplace. These solutions only provide data as statistics and figures, which slows down data analyses and communications within enterprises. Current solutions make growing information requests impossible because they lack the essential narrative for communicating information and insights effectively. The majority of marketing, sales, operations, and analytics teams do not have the time or resources to address all reporting requirements from all levels of a business, including external stakeholders like consumers.

Simply said, the information in spreadsheets and dashboards merely describes the current situation. However, they don't explain why.

How can businesses, therefore, turn their data centre into a profit centre where all parties gain access to pertinent data communicated in a language and format that works for them?

Adopting adata storytelling culture in your business is a straightforward solution.

So, What is data storytelling?

Data storytelling is a method for presenting facts with a gripping story that is suited to a particular audience. It is, arguably, the most significant component of your data analysis and comes in at the last ten feet.

According to some theories, storytelling served as the main vehicle for disseminating information among sizable populations, helping to create the civilizations we know today and promoting successful generational evolution.

Only data storytelling can now provide us with a human perspective on the increasingly complicated and quickly evolving world of the digital era since we have access to so much data.

Data storytelling merges three distinct areas of expertise:

Data science: This area of competence is the interdisciplinary science discipline, which draws knowledge and understanding from data and makes it accessible. Our daily lives have seen tremendous change in the last few decades because of this fascinating field.

This area of knowledge is responsible for many of the technologies we take for granted, yet storytelling is one area where data scientists fall short.

Data scientists are frequently adept at gathering and providing data, but they lack the knowledge to communicate the potential concealed in that data.

Visualizations: The emergence of technology solutions such as dashboards became a natural solution in aiding us in comprehending the vast amounts of data collected. Visualizing data in the form of pie and line charts has opened up a whole new world of possibilities. However, alone data visualizations have limitations. They provided at-a-glance data snapshots, lacking the context needed to explain why something happened.

Narrative: The narrative is the third and, in a way, most important component of a data table. The narrative employs language to serve our individual needs best, enhancing our ability to comprehend new information fully. With visualizations and data serving as crucial proof points, a narrative is essential for communicating ideas.

Clearly, data storytelling is about communicating your insights effectively and giving your data a voice.

The narrative elements that focus on the straightforward language used to convey the facts can be thought of as giving the data a voice. Each piece of data is a protagonist and a character in a narrative with a unique tale to tell. When combined, story, information, and images can produce data tales that spur corporate change.
