Hotel Mumbai Analysis

I just watched Hotel Mumbai. Hotel Mumbai is a 2018 biograohical thriller film directed by Anthony Maras and co-written by Maras and John Collee. It is inspired by the 2009 documentary Surviving Mumbai about the Mumbai attack in the 2008 at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in India. The film stars Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Nazanin Boniadi, Anupam Kher, Tilda Cobham Hervey, Jason Isacs, Suhail, Nayyar, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo.

This story is not only entertain my soul indeed, I have a lesson that I should learn. This issue might not be as serious as racism or religion issues but this is important. This issue called dedication.

According to Cambridge Dictionary, dedication is the activity of giving a lot of your energy and time to something you think is important. In this movie, we can see how dedication is shown from Employers of Taj Hotel especially Arjun and Hemant Oberoi. Arjun is a Sikh waiter at the Taj who has a pregnant wife and a young daughter. Also there is Hemant Oberoi, the head chef of Taj Hotel. Both of these brave men damage their lives on the line to the hotel guests and staffs.

First, we have Arjun. He really shows dedication to his job and guests. He is wearing turban. It's not ordinary Turban. It symbolize honor and respect. He wore it since he was young. Never a single day he went out without it because if didn't wear it, it can give a shame to his family. But then, an English lady is afraid with his beard and turban. She thinks he is a terrorist too. He told the lady about his turban and willing to take it off if it makes the lady uncomfortable. We can see how hard it is for Arjun to take it off. It is his pride. But he said since in Taj they are guest and staff, he will do it. This scene shows how dedicate he is. He gives his pride to the lady because of the Taj's slogan "Guest is God". However in the end, he takes it off to help a Japanese lady who is bleeding too much. He takes the surban to stop the blood stream out her chest. He saves her through his turban. It shows more than pride and dedication.

Same goes for Oberoi. He can run away to the save place if he wants to but he still thinks about the guests who are not save inside the hotel. He is going to save them by gather them around to the safest place in hotel, Chamber Longue. They will be there until the police arrive. Another staff told him to follow Olga who manages to save himself. But he didn't run away. He still thinks about the guests who are still inside and trapped. He stays to save them as much as possible and didn't judge a staff who wants to save himself. Once again he shows dedication through "Guest is God".

After all, this film is great. It shows humanity throuh dedication. It teaches us we should help each others in any condition. Just imagine if the hotel staffs didn't show their dedication maybe there is no people survive inside the hotel. The Taj Hotel will be destroyed by the terrorist.
