This one is a classic. I remember seeing the anime adaptation when I was still an elementary school student, back then I wasn’t interested because I couldn’t understand the story. But now I’m getting addicted to this series. How about the manga? Well I only read the manga for some chapters in Heaven’s Arena arc and Dark Continent arc (and so on). But I tell you, although the art is not as beauty as the other manga on my list this manga has a very well written story and plot, also the character development is pretty good for almost all the character. Hunter X Hunter has a vast world, and it keeps expanding. It makes the mystery vibe keeps on throughout the story.
This manga explains the mechanism of each fight very clearly, and almost all fight have a complex explanation. Some say that make this manga a bit boring, but I personally think that the explanation helps to make this manga complex and well written. The major downside to this manga? Well this manga is well known for its hiatuses. I don’t know, either the author really has a health problem or just a slacker. One can only wonder the completion of this series.

Among other manga on my list, this is the most popular one. You guys may know it only from its anime adaptation, on the contrary I only read the manga. If I recall it right Global TV aired the anime adaptation some years ago, but it got cancelled maybe knowing that the series shows many murders and partial nudities:sudahkuduga. Well I don’t know why it is shounen in Japan because I think that this series is more suited to mature and adult readers. This manga protagonist and antagonist is quite unclear for me. Some say the protagonist is L’s side and some say it’s Light’s side.
This manga is even more complex than the previous. The plot is well written (although I don’t like the ending and some chapters before that). The character development is well developed especially for the Light’s side. You can see how Light’s character changes drastically. If I want to summarize this series in a few words it would be “battle of wits”. The combination of supernatural and main character’s ingenuity makes this manga unique and clever. If you don’t like manga with heavy text (means many long explanations) I don’t suggest you to read this. I even read the manga three times to get a better understanding. I also like Obata’s art, they’re well drawn.

This is maybe the weirdest horror manga I ever read, but also probably the best. You might not know it because it’s very unpopular in Indonesia. You can describe this manga in one word: “spiral”. All the tragedy in this manga involves spiral shape. The story is, well amazing in its own way. Character development is also very good, you can see drastic change in almost all the characters shown.
Before you read this manga I warn you that this manga contains very gore and nudity scene:. It is also a bit mind boggling. The background scene also changes very drastically. [SPOILER ALERT]This story has no happy ending, so you might feel unsatisfied[END OF SPOILER]. As the genre says this manga has a bit romance (a weirdly written romance I say). This manga contains only a few text, so if you hate manga with a long explanation this is a good news for you. The art, I love it. I love the author’s creativity to make those ghosts (or monsters, whatever) and they’re all well drawn. Some panels have a very good perspective too.

4. Berserk

Finally my personal best manga! I don’t want to exaggerate but this manga is really a masterpiece. Well written story? Check. Great character development? Check. How about the art? Piece of art on each panel. This manga has a perfect combination of text and art. Some parts show a heavy text, and some parts show an outstanding art. This manga is a bit unique because most manga shows the backstory of a character on latter chapter. In berserk the backstory shows on earlier chapter. Some say that the backstory is a little bit excessive. I say the backstory makes you to deeply understand of each character’s struggle so it makes the story makes much more sense.
It might be a little confusing at first about what happened to Berserk’s world, but after a few arcs and backstories you’ll get it. If I have a one word to describe this manga, it would be “struggle”. A struggle of a man to defeat a god. This manga is a bit philosophical too, that makes the story unique because it seems to be a simple straightforward action-adventure manga but it actually has a complex story about struggle, ambition, and sacrifice.
This manga is the oldest manga in my list that still isn’t completed yet. Both this and Hunter X Hunter known for their hiatus (though Hunter X Hunter is much worse than Berserk). So the only downside is you must patiently wait for the other chapter to be published.
MAL Score: 9.3
My Personal Score: 10
