Manor Racing Team : Pascal Wehrlein !!!A GLORIOUS POINT
July 4, 2016 | No Comments

For only the second time ever, our sexy little team has left a Grand Prix weekend with points in the bag. Pascal Wehrlein, who started an incredible 12th, stopped for a second time in a lap before the development of a safety car which saw him dead last in the field, somehow managed to fight back to 11th on the final lap, before Sergio Perez’s crash allowed him to move into the final points paying position several corners from the finish line. Resulting in wild celebrations in the Manor Race Team garage and of course, sent MRTB HQ into rapturous ecstasy.

It was a great weekend all round. Not only did we get our first points and equal the team’s best ever qualifying position with a 12th on the Saturday but Rio Haryanto managed a season best 16th position. Rio can consider himself unlucky (yet again) as two separate accidents featuring Torro Rosso cars prevented him from setting a final qualifying lap which could have easily have seen both cars compete in Q.2. To top off an incredible weekend, Manor Race Team Development Driver Jordan King won the GP2 sprint race on Sunday morning.

We at MRTFB HQ have to hold our hands up. Although we rated Pascal very highly, we did last week suggest that his form thus far was not that of a driver who was destined to be driving for the top team in F1. We wrote the article shortly after Baku and hovered over the publish button for a few days trying to decide if we were being too harsh on him and we stand by some of the points we brought up. However, this weekend, he more than silenced us critics. We hope you can forgive us Pascal.

We also have to admit, Austria was not down on our list of potential places to score points. Our handy performance can be explained by the retarmaced surface which assisted in keeping tire temperatures low during the race. That is not going to work for us at the next few races but all we will say is we are very much looking forward to Spa in late (and hopefully damp) August.

Only time will tell just how important that point is. But as things stand one single point puts Manor 10th in the championship ahead of Sauber and maybe the difference between an estimated $40 US dollars in prize money come the end of the year. To put it bluntly, it may be the difference between the team continuing to develop long term or potentially put the team out of business all together. Much like Jules Bianchi did in 2013, Pascal Wehrlein may have just saved the team with his wonder drive in Austria.

A small side note from the weekend. If what has been reported is to be believed, Rio Haryanto has now completed 9 out of the 11 races he has paid for upfront. With the next two races up and coming the team have a decision to make regarding his future. We are aware Abdulla Boulsien met with Indonesian officialS last month but we are not privy to how those talks went and it seems nothing has been decided for the second half of the season.

It is our opinion that Pascals points scoring position helps Haryanto. Without any points on the board and a lot at stake, the team may have opted to replace Rio with a lesser funded driver who could increase the team’s chances of scoring points. This is not as simple as it sounds as there are not an obvious list of candidates for that role and Rio has not only brought in much needed guaranteed funds to the team but kept Pascal on his toes the whole season.

With Sauber in financial trouble, it is unlikely they will develop their car to any great effect this season. As things stand only a high attritional race in Singapore and a freak weather race in either the States or Brazil stands in our way of finishing that all important 10th. Although we would still like to see Alexander Rossi in the car at some point in the season, we see no reason to switch drivers at present.

Pascal Wehrlein, Manor Racing MRT05 reverses to the correct grid slot at the start of the race

Manor Racing Team : Pascal Wehrlein !!!

By: Jonathan Noble, Formula 1 Editor
Pascal Wehrlein has revealed that he was just half-a-second away from getting a penalty that would have robbed him of his maiden Formula 1 point.

The German was one of the stars of the Austrian Grand Prix weekend, delivering a strong qualifying performance and then following it up with a brilliant recovery from the back of the field in the race to take his and Manor's first points under new ownership.

But it nearly went wrong before the start, when Wehrlein accidentally stopped in the wrong slot on the grid, having driven in to the empty 10th place slot left by Felipe Massa.

Realising his mistake, Wehrlein quickly engaged reverse to get back to his 12th place, and just got stopped in time before the red light procedure began.

"I knew Massa was out, although I hadn't seen [what happened]," explained Wehrlein. "But it happened for the first time for me that there was a slot in front of me that was empty.

"I didn't really think about it, so I went behind the next guy and I stopped. Then I saw Sebastian [Vettel] in his red car in front of me [in P9] and I thought, 'I didn't finish qualifying behind him'. So I put reverse gear in and went backwards.

"I managed to stop the car, put it in the first gear and I saw the red light come on. It was maybe just half a second – and half a second later I would have got a penalty."

Although it is understood that rival teams queries whether or not there had been a rules breach with what Wehrlein did, the fact the German was stopped before the red lights came on meant he was in the clear.

Coincidentally, the team's other points as Marussia when Jules Bianchi finished ninth at Monaco in 2014 came on a day when he was given a penalty for starting in the wrong grid slot.

Safety car fightback

Wehrlein also later revealed the scale of his fightback to finish in the points, having been last and 12 seconds behind the rest of the pack following the safety car period.

"I thought the race is done," he said. "We were so unlucky with the safety car [having stopped the lap before]. I was last after that, so I thought okay, that is it today.

"But I kept pushing and trying to manage my tyres, as I didn't want to stop again. In the end I was fighting with [Valtteri] Bottas and [Esteban] Gutierrez and the team told me you need to keep Esteban behind you. He was on fresh tyres, 1.5 seconds quicker, but the team said I could score a point.

"When I crossed the start-finish line, I watched the screen and saw my name was in tenth place. So I thought it must have been [Sergio] Perez, who crashed on the last lap.

"As I was lapped, I wasn't sure if the lap before counted. So I asked, 'did we finish P10 or P11?' When then they said P10, it was amazing."

Pascal Wehrlein doesn't know where pace for F1 points came from

Pascal Wehrlein said he had no idea where the Williams-matching pace behind his first Formula 1 points for Manor in the Austrian Grand Prix came from.

Wehrlein was chasing Valtteri Bottas's Williams for 10th going into the final lap, when a brake-induced crash for Sergio Perez elevated both a place.

It gave Manor only the second points finish of its F1 history, and the first since Jules Bianchi's Monaco 2014 ninth place when the team was running as Marussia.

Wehrlein had qualified 12th, but fell to the back when he pitted just before the safety car for Sebastian Vettel's tyre failure.

He then made his soft tyres last 48 laps as he hunted down Bottas, who was on super-softs fitted 28 laps later.

"I thought 'the race is done' because we were so unlucky with the safety car," Wehrlein admitted.

"But I kept pushing and trying to manage my tyres because I didn't want to stop again.

"I was hoping to get a crazy scenario when [Nico] Rosberg and [Lewis] Hamilton were coming in the blue flags and have an advantage because of that.

"Otherwise it would have been difficult to overtake [Bottas] because he was on 10 or 15 lap old super-softs and I was on more than 40 laps old soft tyres.

"I was still able to fight with him so it was a great performance today from the car and I don't know where it was coming from."

Team principal Dave Ryan reckoned Wehrlein would have passed Bottas and got ninth had the leaders not disrupted their battle.

"We thought we'd get him quite easily, if it hadn't been for the leaders coming through," Ryan told Autosport.

"That kind of upset the rhythm for two laps.

"But he was shaping up to have him and we could have had him."

Wehrlein reckoned Manor's Austria upsurge was largely due to it getting the tyres to work better at the Red Bull Ring.

"It's the first weekend that we are not struggling with tyre temperature," he said.

"We don't have so much downforce as the other teams and downforce puts a lot of energy into the tyres.

"It's the first weekend we are even overheating the tyres. We haven't had this before and it helped us a lot."

He also admitted he was fortunate not to be penalised for initially lining up in pitlane starter Felipe Massa's vacant 10th-place grid slot, before reversing into his own place.

Wehrlein was able to complete his move and line up correctly before the lights started coming on for the start process.

"I reversed, stopped, put it into first gear then I saw the first light come," Wehrlein said.

"Half a second later I'm sure that was it [a penalty].

"Then you have so many buttons to put the engine mode in and another thing to put in, then I needed to find the reverse gear and I was like a DJ on my steering wheel."

Quote:Pascal Wehrlein:
